Tomoe River

I'm not sure if this is covered anywhere else on the forum, but I've recently been in contact with Olivia at Elia Note whose lovely journals many of you will be familiar with.  I asked her what the situation is with Tomoe River, the company who supply her with the paper she uses (and the main reason I buy from her).  Apparently the company has now been sold to Sanzen who will continue to produce the paper.  I don't know any more details.  At the moment Olivia is just producing 68gsm products but she tells me 52gsm will shortly be back.  As ever she has been both courteous and cooperative, always a delight to deal with.

This may be common knowledge already but if it isn't,  I hope it puts a smile on the faces of those like me who thought TR paper might become a thing of the past.   It probably isn't.   If anyone has any more detail on this I'd be interested to know.

Hi, and nice to meet another TR 52gsm enthusiast...

There are a number of threads on the topic of the future of our favorite paper. You'd probably find most of them if you use google or another external search engine to search the site, although maybe the search capabilities have improved a little?

It seems mostly we have to be patient... but there will be more of it, eventually.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

There recently was a discussion about Tomoe problems on Reddit. See this link (look for u/duvangrgataonea/

Gee, I wonder if it's old stock with quality issues or possibly new stock with a change in the manufacturing process?

Either way it is sad to see that kind of performance, especially with an EF nib.

Wishing things change for the better soon.

Also, thank you for the updated information.

In the podcast "Tokyo Inklings" the presenters (CY and Jacob) who live and work in Japan, have some contact with the Sanzen company etc, and have been following the Tomoe River story.

They have covered developments within various past episodes that I have listened to. (All past episodes are available for downloading.)

A recent episode from two months ago is titled "New New Tomoe River".

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
