What kind of name for an ink is "Adular Blue"?

I guess it goes under the same heading as "Cynical Cyan," "Fawning Forest Green," and "Grumpy Grape."

:) This was one of the first ink samples I ever got.  Thanks for the memory!  No idea about the name, though, never bothered to worry about it.

I'm all about quarrelling with ink names 😉

Oh, that's terrific! Thank you so much -- I love knowing that.

I should say, rather, that I kind of love knowing that. I'm also kind of disappointed. I liked the idea of an ink rebel naming colors not "Love," "Forgiveness," and "Confidence," but "Flattery," "Bossiness," "Gawd-Help-Us," and "Not-You-Again."

But you can't have everything.

Thanks again!

Adular is a Latin verb; to flatter.  Similar meaning in Spanish.

Yes, that's why I was playing with the various unlikely ink terms. It seemed so odd to name an ink a flattering & fawning blue. I still am enamored of that notion, but I suspect that @I-am-not-really-here is right, and that the name is meant to refer to the Adular (lunar stone) or moonstone.

I agree that the name probably comes from moonstone. On the other hand, does anyone know where I can get samples of "Gawd-Help-Us" and "Not-You-Again"? :)

Tono & Lims does have "My Bank Account Is Sick," "Forgetting U," and "Who Are You?", but there's a missing niche.

Now I feel compelled to start a campaign for a pair of inks, one named Quin and the other Makhabesh... :D

That would be awesome.

After all, there's an ink named for someone on FPN, cyber6 -- Robert Oster Asterquiza Rot....

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Oh, I didn't know she was the one RO named the ink for.   I'd even be satisfied with one ink: "Quin & Makhabesh".  Though I don't think they'd agree on a single color, so we might have to stick with two inks...  I'm thinking a medium-dark red for Quin and a light brown (or dark tawny - you know, lion color) for Makhabesh...  :)   Maybe I'll suggest it if Diamine ever do another reddit ink.

Light brown with dark red sheen?

:)  I don't think that's chemically possible, though if it is, I'll take it - as long as it shades.  Dark red with gold sheen might be possible (I fear the red would have to lean too blue in order to have gold sheen, though, not sure).

I'd also be game for a high shading brown - dark to light / tawny color, just not a red-leaning brown.

Sheen color is determined by the dye.  Blue dyes generally sheen red.  Purple dyes generally sheen green.  Etc.  There's some variation, and I think ink chemists are working like mad to produce unique combinations, but I don't know if it's possible for any brownish dye (especially one that leans yellow/green rather than red) to sheen red.  It may be (I'm not chemist), but I don't recall seeing brown inks that sheen (that Tiger ink looks dark red to me).

Meanwhile, isn't he cuuuuuutttteee!?

Thank you for the explanation -- that's interesting. And yes, so cute!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
