Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Rubinato Writing Ink Blue-Black

This is review #158 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was really quick and easy. This is my first and only exposure to this brand. This was a sample gifted to me, but I found Rubinato ink on Amazon, though not in blue-black. The ink dries to a very pale blue-grey. The zoom is the most accurate example of what I see. The scan and screencapture look too dark in places, but aren't too far off. The absorbent / copy paper image is fairly accurate, too. I'm not sure the images reflect it, but there's a sort of soft, muted elegance to this shade.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Quin!  Stop!  It's a trap!

I like this ink, and I don't think I heard of the brand.  I have nearly all your comparison inks, too.  Good dry time, great behavior.  I even appreciate its pallor. Thanks again for another great review.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Me either.  This was one of the samples gifted to me by @A Smug Dill.  I believe this is the ink (sorry for huge image, it's a link to Amazon's):

I couldn't find the ink anywhere other than Amazon (in the various US FP stores I use).

Really nice colour ... I like what I see. But not an ink brand that's available in my usual webshops (within Europe)

:) I thought you might.  From the Amazon listing (just fixed the link!), it's made by a small shop in Italy.  Here's the website.  Hopefully @A Smug Dill can tell us where he found it.

The link took me to Mead envelopes.  I probably need some anyway.

Great job @LizEF  This seems like quite an intriguing ink... and the bottle looks so old fashioned and elegant!

How come the goat turned into a guard, line 6? ;) did you get distracted by a wagging tail? :D

@namrehsnoom you can contact them directly... i

Yes, I really like the bottle, though the price is kinda steep - I don't like the color that much.

He was always a guard - he's the big goat who came from the watch tower.  (As opposed to the little goats who raced and tried to attack Quin's shield.)

Alas, no.

This could make it onto the list. Immediately vintage looking, soft on the eye. Never heard of it either 🤷‍♂️

:) Yes, very intriguing.  Curiosity alone may kill resistance...

Oh wow, nice ink. Never heard of them...nice bottle too!
Thank you for sharing, it's always nice to see relatively unknown makers (to me) highlighted. :)

Thank you @LizEF - I love it!

I've come across the brand for dip pen inks, and had heard there were some that could be used in fountain pens, but always forgot about them.

I think this might be one I'd actively seek out. I'd be very curious to see if there are others like it.

Yeah, the Amazon listing doesn't give me a lot of confidence.  I really can't tell which colors are for fountain pens and which are for dip pens (except I'm pretty sure the gold has to be for dip pens).  There's just not a lot of info out there about these inks.

So I decided to go check out all the Rubinato inks reviewed here, and the most recent is from 2016 and includes some interesting comments - it may be that this isn't made in Italy after all, just rebranded Chinese ink...  (That's all rumor.  At this point, I have no idea, just sharing as I go...)

OK, followed the http links in visvamitra's review, then https'ed them to see if it would work, and it does, so here's the bottle in that review - I think I would pay $40 just for one of these bottles:

Rubinato (as shown above = rubinato.it) is an old shop with a very lethargic site. No harm meant there, and their specialty is style above all  re bottles themselves (also empty), glass dip pens, and blotters etc. I had some of their inks and I'm sure (never spent the time to look for proof) that it's not their own ink. Likely from Stipula or other manufacturers there, or anywhere else in Europe.

I bought my bottles of Rubinato ink from Peter's of Kensington — or, more precisely, its official eBay store, since this (only) happened because eBay was offering a 20%-off sales campaign on the day across a number of bigger Australian sellers — back in 2018.

My bottle looks like the one shown here:

67ml for A$15.20 (~US$11 today). The products have long since been delisted on eBay and in Peter's of Kensington's own online shopping site, but surprisingly this orphaned image survived (while the ones for the other ink colours on the same order have been obliterated) on eBay:

Peter's of Kensington listed it as being made in Italy, but I saw no statement or evidence of it from the manufacturer on or inside the nondescript black cardboard box, or on the glass bottle, or on any of the labels and slips of paper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
