Info on a Pilot NOS

hey, I'm finding these from a local seller. Price is roughly 10 USD. It looks like antecessor of Pilot 78G? Can't find much info about it.

I had one of these in red, but gave it away.  I never knew the model name or number but it was, as you say, very similar to the Pilot 78G.

Ok sort of figured out. Heck, I have 2 con-40 and do prefer to fill cartridges. Hard to find and expensive. Looks like a buy.

Ok I bought this pen and I noticed that the nib is a little scratchy feed a little on the dry side and the threads has some friction/feel to it. No big deal about the nib but I'm wondering about the quality of older Pilot pens. It's not that they are bad but my kakuno's have been winners right out of the box. Threads feels smooth, nib perfect, very wet and all.

Despite the cheap plastic it feels nice in hand and came with the con-20.

I'm fairly certain that this is actually a newer design than the 78G, which goes back quite a few years as one of Pilot's basic "school pen" type offerings. The nib and section appear to be similar to a clear/demonstrator pen that I purchased as new in the early 2000s, that pen is pretty much the lowest quality Pilot pen I've seen, which is to say, it's still a decent pen, but fit-n-finish as well as materials are only acceptable to good, rather than excellent... The nib in mine is smooth, but the the overall package is underwhelming, which is not a big loss, since it was also around $10.

 

The nib and feed should pull out of the section easily, allowing you to adjust the nib alignment (likely cause of scratchiness) and scrub the feed out, which could improve ink flow.

thanks  awa54, The nib now seems to be alright now, just some feedback, but I'm sure I can get it smoother with some polishing. I think the real downside for me now is the super stiff clip.
