What pen(s) are you using today?

That's a pretty pen.  But it's also a HUGE pen -- an M800 is too big and heavy for me to use.  And for it to be THAT much larger than an M800?  :yikes:

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

You got me curious, so I weighed the Samurai and an M800, both inked. Subjectively, to me, the Samurai feels lighter than the M800, but it is not.

Ranga: Capped 39.6g  Uncapped: 25.3g

M800: Capped 30.7g   Uncapped: 21.7g

Good-looking pen, @Helen350. A piston filler with pleasant nib and inkview, with likable filigree and a sharp chrome look? Heh, the Pelikan Toledo is over €1,000... 😄

You bloody enablers!

I just placed an order for one of those (with EF nib, of course, which still isn't going to be fine enough for my tastes), after holding out for several weeks.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I took advantage of the recent Ranga group buy for their new oversize Samurai model. It arrived yesterday, and I inked it today. I am finding it very comfortable to write with. It is very light for its size, being made of ebonite. I had the section threaded to take a #8 Bock nib and had the nib ground to CI by fpnibs for this pen.

To give you a better sense of this pen's size, here it is with a Pelikan M800, Kanilea Pen Company Lewa Lani and a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande.

Wow, that is a rather large pen! But very handsome!! And that blue is a very good color. Hope you're enjoying it because that writing looks wonderful 😀

I am not a big fan of the Parker 45, (Nothing wrong with it, I just find it uninteresting).

However, I really like the "Lady 45" that you show above. I will definitely look for it at the Commonwealth Pen Show in September. I have put most of my pen (and related) purchases on hold until I see what I sell at the show.

If you are planning to attend the show, PM me and I will give you my information and offer some special incentive (price/gift or such) if you purchase something from me.

Thank you for the picture above. It almost looks like a Japanese pocket pen -imho.

This is one of the things I love about our world of fountain pens.  You find the Parker 45 uninteresting, and I find them fascinating. So much diversity.

Sadly, I won't be attending the Commonwealth Pen Show, as I'm in the UK...but maybe some of our other members are?

Thank you for the offer, anyway.

Another Parker 45, today. A Flighter Deluxe from the late 1970's.

Very nice pen 😉

I found the Parker 45 line accidentally, and now I am thinking it would be an excellent EDC. (Also a cheap one, as I believe one can find the much cheaper plastic versions for below the cost of a Lamy Safari.)

You will find metal ones, with a gold nib, for less than a Safari too.

Top tip is to look for fligher gift sets - biro/pencil/fp combination.

Sellers probably won't be able to tell you if the nib is gold, or plated steel as you have to know how to unscrew the nib to find that out.

But yes, they make nice every day carry pens - if you get cramp from using it, relax your grip more.

The fine nib is a favourite of mine.

That's excellent.

I also love the Parker 45.

I found a blue version of Coronet today!

I've been collecting Flighter variants of the same type lately. (probably Japanese version)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
