MB Honore du Balzac Ink

Recommended Posts

The brown ink from shipping made the sample label unreadable, I thought, but I have finally determined that the ink inside is MB Honore du Balzac.  The se BJ page is in an Endless Notebook, the ink writes slightly wetter there (better and thicker paper).

@amberleadavisplease move this to the right thread if I have it wrong.  Thanks.

@TheMustard, have I id'd correctly?

So, now that you have used it, do you enjoy it?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Yes @essayfaire that’s The Balzac. Pretty much the most difficult MB limited edition ink to find in my experience. I have only seen it for sale once.

Well, I bought mine overnight seven years ago. That's the problem with at least MB's LEs -- but it's always easy to solve -- you just have to buy them as soon as they appear. After that, you're maybe (but not always) up at the stake. MB told me that their LEs are/were issued in varying quantities. Sometimes they last for a good year or two... sometimes they're gone overnight....

I actually like the ink but suspect had this pen not be tuned and smoothed it would not have written well.  It's a pen I only use intermittently, and I have been pleasantly surprised that each time I ignored it(maybe 5-7 days max) it started right up again.  So though it is a "dry" ink, it does not seem prone to drying out!

The color really pops on the page, too.  It makes it a very good self-editing ink as it contrasts easily with whatever deep and dark color I initially use.

Would I go so far as to purchase it?  Probably not - I can't say that it clearly deserves the premium above the Pilot Iro or the Platinum ukiyo-e inks.  But yes, I do enjoy using it, thanks to @The Mustard !

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
