Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Chopin

This is review #143 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a dark blue-black with a slight purple lean.  Cleaning was quick and easy.  The ink is so dark that it's hard to say what image best reflects it.  Examine them all and assume the real color is in there somewhere... :D I think this is an ink I'll prefer in a dry-ish 1.1 stub.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thanks for another great review, Liz.  I MAY have had a sample of this, and my admittedly-vaporish memory recalls it as the grayish blue-black I had been yearning for.

I'll have to go later and check my ink samples and scribbles.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Thanks for the review!

This one needs a pen on the dry side but not necessarily a wider nib. I am currently using it in a dryish, but not very dry, Parker Classic ef and it's a grey-indigo (not like Diamine's - while nice, that's not indigo) - it's dark but not close to black. In Pilot 78g B italic it went a little more violet. It 'hits the spot' for me - I like it a whole lot and I haven't seen another ink quite like it.

Great job, Liz

I'm rooting for Makhabest pranking Quin! Or even better the staff finds Makhabesh and not Quin :D

BTW is it my imagination or the reviews have been more on the blue/black darker spectrum? :)

Thank you as always @LizEF - I find these so useful :)

Sometimes, like today, they tell me more about inks I definitely don't need.  Which can be as important as discovering those I really want!

Of all of Diamine's 'series' inks, the composers have been the least appealing for me, especially given the premium price.

Careful you don't end up with 30 inked pens as a result! ;)

Thanks for sharing your experience. This is my first use, so I'm guessing at what nibs will work best.

 If the next two weren't already recorded, I'd run with it.  Of course, Makhabesh would need a mini-staff, otherwise he'd have an awfully hard time flying, and just imagine all the bashing poor Quin would take when M tried landing on his shoulder...  :lticaptd:

Yeah, the voting seems to go through cycles.  But I love blue-blacks, so there are more to choose from.:blush::D

Glad to save you some money.  You can use it to buy some music, instead. ;)

Update:  I found my tests/scribbles of Diamine Chopin.  I was mistaking it for another ink that really was a grayish BB.  My actual sample notes read: Dark, flat.  😝

:) Definitely dark.  And without sufficient light, or in a wet pen, it may well look flat.  Unless of course, you are referring to the fact that it's just ink lying on a sheet of paper, in which case, it may as well be 2-dimensional (even if it's technically not) for all functional purposes to the average human, in which case, it would indeed be flat - lying on a 2-dimesional plane (the face of the paper (let's not complicate matters with bleed, here)).  I mean, how much flatter can you get?  (Hint: not as flat as the ink!)  Now someone better in various sciences or arts is going to show up and explain to me that this is not what you meant when you called the ink flat, to which I say: :P

“The ink was dark and flat.” sounds like the first sentence in a short story or chapter in a thriller. ;)

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I think also it ended up in my Who-Cares Ink Dump, Blue Edition II.  🖌

It certainly added a bit of Gravitas.  How come there isn't an ink by that name anyway?

Yes, one ranked one step higher than the one that started "It was a dark and stormy night..." :P

Maybe if Diamine do a 2022 reddit ink we can suggest that name.  (And now an insight into Liz's disturbing thought patterns: Diamine Earl Grey (a reddit ink) > Grey > Grayvitas > Sounds like "gravy" > "gravy" + "tas" > I wonder if @Tas ever made a brown Teeling mix..... )

The ink lay so dark and flat on the page it seemed to suck light from the room and hope from my heart...

:D Perhaps a tragedy.

Morris glanced at the page.  The ink was dark and flat, nothing to suggest danger.  He reached out to take the page, not noticing the faint ripple.  As his hand touched the page, the ink latched onto his thumb.  Morris screamed.

OK, thriller. ;)

The ink was dark and flat.  Not anymore.  It drew together, rising in a column, spinning, flinging bits of glitter in colorful arcs around the room.  Isabel giggled.  Mom propped her hands on her hips.  "I am not cleaning this up."

 Fantasy?

Hi @LizEF.

Thanks for this review, the story which develops more and more into a thriller and for the entertaining replies. What a good reading!

If I wouldn't had put a moratory to myself, this Diamine Chopin would had found its way on my order list without a second thought. However, following the discussion I suggest to call such a color Blue Hole - only some photons can escape.

😂

One life!

:lticaptd:That's perfect - this could be the new description for several almost-black inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
