Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Olivine

This is review #138 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy.  This ink is far more blue than my plant-y greens, but nowhere near as blue as Waterman Harmonious Green.  It's far brighter than my murky greens, and nothing at all like my Olive Green.  In short, I have no other green like it.  The zoom and scan are pretty accurate.  The screen capture didn't pick up the color at all.

Errata: in the analysis, "priming of the fee_d_" (needs the "d" added); in the quote,  it's "...thread that ties the hear_t_ of..." (not the "heard"); and it's a "Writing Promp_t_" (needs the "t" added)...

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Thanks for the review!

E.Olivine sounds like some type of bacteria. 🤢

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I love your reviews, but will pass on this ink.  Poor lubrication?  Kinda long dry time?  Confusing name (my MV Olivine is pleasant to use AND the color is olive-y)....hold me back!

On the other hand, you are forcing me to look for yet another Prera demonstrator in a different color.  🤣

Thanks.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Thank you!  Me too, not murky enough, and yeah, all that.

:D No apologies!  I love my Prera.  I think it's the best of the Pilot Steel nib options.  If it came with the option of getting a nib with a winking face that's also sticking his tongue out, I'd get it in a heartbeat! ;) :P

Great job, Liz  Olivine has such a distinct olive-y / or green yellow colour. Despite that, I like this kind of greens.... but I have one already :D

Huh, and look at all the fimbriae on said bacteria!  Clearly it loves absorbent paper.... :D

Not this Olivine.  No olives in sight.  (If you're saying you have this ink and it does have an olive-like color, then something's up with one of ours.  )

I like olive greens, but not blue-leaning greens.  And I think it's fabulous that we all have our own color preferences - there are plenty to go around, and it would be tragic if some had to be hated by all! :)

No. I meant Olivine as a stone... :)

Ooooh, gotcha!  Well, sounds like Pelikan kinda missed the color, then.  Of course, I imagine there could be quite a range of colors in the stone - at least, there often is.

Preach! :)   (Or is that outdated?  Has "Word!" come back into style yet? :D )

Thank you as always @LizEF - another excellent, succinct review.

As has so often been the case with this range, it didn't hit the mark for me either. I wasn't keen on the colour or the behaviour.

Across the Edelstein range, there have been one or two 'wins' in my book, but the majority of them just don't do it for me. Which is a shame, because they should have the expertise and experience to produce great inks and consistently fail to do so. There are a few exceptions - Golden Beryl surprised me, and I like the colour of Moonstone and a couple of others, but the majority are a hard pass.

Yeah, I don't remember being tempted by any of the Edelsteins.  Apparently their effort to produce unique colors has tripped into the "it's unique because no one likes it" realm...

I'll disagree with you on that.  I really like Edelstein Olivine.  Some of the Ink of the Year colors I definitely passed on, but Olivine (and also Ruby Red, and Smoky Quartz, and of course Amethyst), I was happy with.

Hooray!  It needs some extra love from somewhere, glad you can give it. :)

I like it because it doesn't lean blue, doesn't lean too yellow, and is a DARK green.

Maybe that's because you haven't seen Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz on offer at about a quarter of the retail price (with free delivery thrown in for large enough orders). ;)

Maybe, but online images of Smoky Quartz don't really appeal to me that much...  Tanzanite comes close, but looks too purple.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
