Do you recommend me buying a Nakaya fountain pen ?

Hi everybody,

                           I intend to buy a new fountain pen during the end of year festivities.  I am intrigued with the Nakaya brand, but it's an expensive brand and I am thinking twice . I never wrote with a Nakaya fountain pen, and hesitate to take the plunge so would you encourage me to go ahead ?

No, I wouldn't. Why would I want that outcome, or be keen for it to occur, such that I would give you a psychological push in that direction?

 

 

What specifically do you want to acquire or satisfy, with either the purchase or the user experience of your next writing instrument, given you already have alternatives on hand that satisfy the functional requirement(s)?

 

Is Nakaya the only brand that will fulfil those qualitative and/or technical requirements, irrespective of price?

 

What would happen, or how would you feel, if those requirements are not met? Then, use that to gauge whether the purchase is worthwhile to you.

I bought one once.  Now I have 100 of them.  Does that tell you what I think of them?

 

Of course, that is personal - Nakayas very much suit my taste and my way of writing.  Perfect pens for me.  Your mileage may vary.

Nakaya Fountain Pens are quite beautiful and feature excellent nibs. I do not own any, but I have friends who do, including one who collects them. 
 

I don’t know if I would be allergic to urushi but suspect I might be as I am allergic to poison ivy. This alone would give me caution in buying a pen made of urushi. 


I might buy a Nakaya if I found one that was not made of urushi, for no more than a few hundred dollars and in at least very good condition.

 

I would buy Nakaya pens if I was wealthy.

i think a lot depends on the level of pens you are currently using.  That being said, they are exquisite pens and writers and I own two of them.

I think the answer is trivial.

 

If you have the funds and nothing better to expend them on, then why not?

 

Deciding if you have something better to expend your money into is something you only can decide. Any consideration any of us may do is, otherwise, irrelevant.

 

The pens... I do not own any, but I understand they are excellent quality.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

I bought one and love it!  The Decapod Writer with a med soft nib is a great writer and is beautiful.  My second Nakaya was shipped today, it a Dorsel Fin version 2 with a broad nib.  I can't wait to write with it.  Go for it!!!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
