Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sailor Shikiori Chushu

This is review #129 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: I don't have any inks very close to this color.  The color going down the sink reminded me of grape popscicles (or snowcones) after you've sucked some of the flavoring / syrup out of it (or before you've added enough syrup).  The scan is about as accurate as anything I can imagine - perhaps it's a little lighter than in real life, but not much.  How strange - it seems the cameras like this color!  The zoom is also quite accurate.  The screen capture gives you an idea of how dark this ink looks from a distance in an EF nib - it's really hard to see the colors that the scan and especially the zoom bring out.  Cleaning was amazingly quick and easy.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job, Liz  This is the first time, you recommend a sample over a bottle. When I used my sample, curtsey of @A Smug Dillthe lubrication was all right.... although I put it in a vintage wet pen...

I learned a new verb today, portalling, which spellcheck, insists it's portaging :D

Really?  Haven't been paying attention.  My standing recommendation is to always sample first if at all possible.

Yeah, I suspect it was that wet pen that made the lubrication good.  A Japanese EF is going to reveal lubrication extremities faster than pretty much anything else. :)

  Sometimes specialists need to create new words.  I couldn't decide whether it should be portaling or portalling, and went with the shorter - hooray for obscure rules in English spelling...  Maybe I should insert an interlude where the Wizards' Advisory Counsel on Linguistic Concerns meets to debate proper verbification of various repurposed nouns.

That would bore the viewer/reader to death, of a bunch of old wizards talking linguistic... Nowadays audiences, need to be shocked out of their stupor by action/ battles/ provocation every nano second otherwise........they'll be distracted by their phones....  :D

OK, OK.  Hint taken.  I have a hard time skipping over what leads to the action, though.  I've been considering adding extra to my website, so I can tell the whole story but only include the more active bits in my reviews...  Hard to know when skipping bits would be skipping too much though, since I know the whole story, including what's never written at all...

Sorry that's not what I meant. It was meant as a criticism of the movie industry...which there's style but no substance....  :)

:D Thanks.  I see where you're going now - a movie that's all action and no plot or characterization - yeah, definitely too much of that.

But I'm still very conscious of how long it takes to tell a story in 3-4 sentence blocks, and don't want to bore my readers.  I'm hoping there's enough of interest not to make folks yawn.

As I recall, the dry time of this ink is quick coming out of a very fine nib.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Wonderful ink. I have gone through 60mL of this ink. Chushu has a permanent home in my Kaweco Liliput (ef), and Pelikan m200 Grey Marbled (IB). I first used this ink while taking a Graph Theory course in undergrad. The dry time is a nonissue for me (Rhodia). Moreover, my professor complemented my ink. Everyone I know likes this ink!

Reminds me a bit of Eclipse.

Hmm.  In subtlety of color, perhaps, but images of Eclipse show a blue color pretty clearly.  Even looking at Chushu up front, I have a hard time seeing the color, but what I see is definitely purple (ish).

Thank you @LizEF as always - great review!

This is an interesting ink, I used to use it a lot (and I mean a lot - I'm on certainly my third proper Jentle sized bottle), but recently, I've become fonder of lighter shades and gravitate more to something like Earl Grey (though it has less purple) or Poussiere de Lune.

I think I might try it with a bit of dilution - I suspect I would like it more that way. I've never had lubrication problems with it, but i don't think I've ever used it in a really fine nib - so perhaps that's what I need to try too!

We have a new expert!  You're going to have to do a lot of writing to catch up, @TitoThePencilPimp! ;)

Let us know how it goes!  I think either a larger nib, or a little bit of dilution would make it more interesting, but the dilution would harm the lubrication, so I'm thinking either way, a larger and/or wetter nib is best.

I might be tempted if I did not already have a bottle of Robert Oster Purple Rock.

:)  So many inks, so little time.  One must prioritize.

This is one I have been keenly interested in but, now that I see it with your Pilot EF, I'm not sure I want something this dark (though it is quite nice). For regular writing I'm gravitating more to shades that are soft and light while still being highly legible, and I typically use Japanese Fs.

So, another useful review for me - thanks!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
