WOW!

I am constantly astounded over the beauty and artistry of maki-e pieces.  But for me (even if *could* afford them, the urushi finish makes them "look, but don't touch" for me.... :(

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

ETA: And before I get any guff from ANYONE about being a "fear monger" -- yes, I AM that allergic to urushiol oil, which is the same stuff that is in poison ivy (and poison oak, and poison sumac -- kindly note the word "POISON" in the names).  And can NOT take the risk (poison ivy goes systemic on me, and the last time I had it I went through THREE bouts of steroids trying to knock it out, and that took about 6 weeks; I had a $400 US water bill for that quarter, since I was doing laundry every day so I wouldn't re-infect myself with my clothes or the sheets and towels.

I would not wish that on my worst enemy -- it's HORRIBLE.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Beautiful, thanks for sharing! I always look forward to Pelikan’s maki-e releases.

This is a custom order, not an official one.

Pelikan will have another mixed raden released later this year or earlier next year.

It is a truly beautiful pen!  There is such an interesting contrast between the efficient functional design of the pen and the serene beauty of the maki-e scene.  Quite a wonderful piece and you are lucky to have it!

Bespoke Piece. Taka Maki-e and raden on Pelikan M1000 body. Pavilion, mountain and waterfall.

Really very nice! And the fact that the images were imagined, conceived, and then executed as a one-off is truly impressive. Congratulations.

Absolutely gorgeous!

Sadly, I am clumsy and sometimes drop pens. So, my rule is to buy pens which are functional, but not beautiful enough to cry over.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
