Do you send them ebonite rods, for they make only the standard mottled ebonite colours. Even the earlier matte green of your woodex was fantastic.

No. I just choose my color from the options they provide. 🙏🏼

Wow... That's one handsome looking pen... Honestly I think the no.40 nib suits it more than the kanwrite no 35 nib it comes with... Feels more in proportions with the section and the pen overall... How's it to write with? Could you share a writing sample?

Cheers

Very nice 👍. For anyone who loves Indian eyedropper pens, I think this is a must buy. The finishing and the polishing of this pen is just superb.

Woodex has no 40 nibs in stock now and can supply you in friction fit setup. They dont have nib units. you can buy nib unit from ASA and request Woodex to thread accordingly if they agree.

I will try to post a writing sample

Looks very nice, it's a rather large pen, isn't it?

So if I understand you set up the no. 40 Ambitious nib with a feed and collar and asked Woodex to thread the pen to the size of the collar.

What collar and feed are you using there? (I understand you got it from Asa).

The threading on that collar looks larger that the size 6 Bock next to it, is it a size 8 diameter collar?

thanks

PS

an additinal questions regarding ASA.

These days their online shop seems to be out of stock of almost anything.

I wanted to order an I Can from them but it's many months all ASA pens are out of stock except the odd one or two.

I also notice that when some of their pens are available there is only one choice of ebonite (usually black) and finish (usually matt), and other coloured ebonite is very rarely available.

Do they have specific problems? I suppose Covid has not helped.

this is a complete nib unit supplied by ambitious. Nib unit consisting of housing feed and nib. ASA resold this nib unit to me.
Woodex supplied the pen with a no 35 nib friction fit.

I threaded their section for this no 40 nib unit.
I hope it is crystal clear now. 👍
I have no idea about other asa items. Maybe you can ask them directly?

Got it, thanks. I understand you bought the full no. 40 nib unit from Asa, and that the Woodex pen was a 35 nib friction fit (so I assume the diameter of the friction fit feed was 6mm or just a fraction more).

When you threaded the pen for the 40 nib unit, to which diameter did you thread it? (I assume to thread it you need to know the diameter...)

It is correct to say that the nib unit that holds the 40 nib is a larger diameter than the threading that would hold the Bock size 6 nib unit that you are showing in your images? (they look different diameter!).

(you know why I ask, Hari? because there is still a group buy going on for the Ambitious nibs, and I still have not understood if the no. 40 Ambitious nib can be fitted in a Bock size 6 housing, or it needs a larger one with a larger feed!... I did ask, and the answers was that no. 35 and no. 40 nibs both fit in a size 6 housing... but then others said the no. 40 does not, so I want to be 100% sure)

That’s right the ambitious no 40 nib unit is NOT bock threads compatible. In fact it’s some proprietary design meaning not compatible with JoWo or bock. It has inch threads.

Thanks Hari, I apologize for insisting with questions, I am trying to collect useful info from you! 🙏

So excuse my curiosity, how do you thread a pen for such nib unit? you need the right size tool, I assume.

And also, OK that the no. 40 Ambitious nib unit is not compatible with Bock unit threading, as the threading is different, but if you pull out just the nib and feed, can you fit an Ambitious no. 40 nib in a Bock housing, or is also the size of "foot of the nibs" and of the feeds different?

trying to make my question even simpler to understand

are these sizes shown in the picture (internal diameter of the housing) the same?

and can I use a loose Ambitious no. 40 nib in a Bock hosing with a Bock feed?

I havent measured the IDs. But I think its unlikely a loose no 40 nib can be successfully integrated into a Bock Housing and Bock feed. Bock housing has a positive stop for the nib and the no 40 will prove too long for it to fit properly in relation to the feed.

Best bet for you is to ask Ranga if they can get the nib units from ASA and make a pen for you usng that nib unit.

thanks for answering, that's what concerns me, I was wondering whether I should get some spare Ambitious no. 40 nibs in the running group buy, but if I can't fit them in Bock housing, and if they need larger housing and feed, I don't have the correct set up to use them... (nor pens).

The guy running the group buy says they do fit size 6 housing, but I'm somewhat skeptical.

Perhaps I should just get one or two and make my own tests... :)

oh, and yes, I will possibly ask Ranga if they can set one no. 40 Ambitious up on one of my next Rangas...

@hari317 thanks to your pics, I got a model 39. I liked it very much. Very elegant in appearance.

They offer 2 types of model 39 now. One comes with a friction fit #35mm nib. The other version comes with a friction fit #40mm ambitious nib, a white dot on cap, slightly different shape of section. This is my first jumbo pen with 40 mm nib. Hands are not used to it yet.

Now that many Indian companies offer screw-in nib units (eg. Kanwrite, Ambitious, Click etc), I hope there will be versatile & robust pens at entry-level prices for people who are unable to afford higher-end nibs or gold nibs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
