Hei from Norway!

I'm a long-time fountain pen writer, but only wrote with (blue-black) ink cartridges for most of my life. Moved from the Netherlands to Norway more than a decade ago and was dismayed by the lack of even standard ink cartridges in the region where we ended up. This led to a need to search online and there, I discovered the world of converters and so many inks and fountains pens I didn't know of! So one thing led to another and suddenly I have 20 bottles of ink and my first gold nib (Pilot Falcon SF)!

I found a lot of information that originated here and I figured it's about time to formally introduce myself to the FPN.

Welcome to FPN! We look forward to hearing from you!

What are your favorite inks?

Technical question: how strict are the customs laws in Norway for importing goods for personal use? It seems one could save quite some money (for example 21% ex-NL) ordering items from the EU, but only if the import duties/hassles are not so big.

Guess I'm partial to dragon inks, I have Diamine Red Dragon and Dragon Blood, De Atramentis Magic Dragon, Robert Oster Dragon's Night 🐉. But I'm still pretty much discovering inks! Luckily, Norway is slowly catching up and I can find a fair selection here.

We used to be able to import personal orders up to 350 kr (approx. 34 Euro/40 USD) without VAT or import duties, but that is changing now. International web shops that wish to sell in Norway are now supposed to register in the so-called VOEC-register and add Norwegian VAT (25%) during the checkout process. Orders up to 3000 kr are then free from import duties. But if a webshop is not registered, you have to pay import duties for orders between 350 and 3000 kr. But I can receive gifts for abroad up to 1000 kr duty-free.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
