J. Herbin Vert Empire

Vert Empire is a classic from the J. Herbin lineup. It's an understated greyish green of medium saturation. Depending on the lighting it can look greener or greyer (hence the difference in scans and photos). It has some light shading and a bit water resistance. The flow is okay.

All images are scans colour-corrected with grey card, except close-up photos which are also white-balanced with a grey card.

Thanks for the overview! This ink has a one of a kind hue. I have not found anything comparable yet.

A classic.

Thank you for the review, and especially the comparisons, which are equally helpful.

Looking at the swabs Jungle Green seems comparable to my eye.  I'll stick with Verte Empire.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Thanks for the great review! I won't repeat the superlatives regarding your flex writing ... 😍

Vert Empire is a favorite. After giving it a break for a while, a couple days ago I filled a Pilot 78g with a Plumix F italic nib with it and I'm super happy.

To me, Vinta Piloncitos in the swabs above and in your recent review of it looks similar to Vert Empire. That said, my sample of Piloncitos is a lot more green than grey in comparison to yours.

Fabulous review of a favourite ink.

Thank you for putting me back in my happy place :) With the exception of the really vivid 'amazon' type greens, every one of those swabs makes me smile.

Fantastic review, thank you! This is currently my favourite from the Herbin lineup, no wonder I'm eyeing Vert Atlantide for my first bottle of glitter ink...

Interesting!  Your review is the first to make this color look appealing to me! :D  Just goes to show how much range fountain pen inks have once you throw in the pen and paper variables...  Thanks for your review!

My Piloncito sample is long gone and I don’t miss it. I remember it being very dry and I’m indifferent to the shimmers. I think P is browner (“dirtier”) and has more colour variation.

Terrific review!  Thank you so much for taking time to do this.

I love your presentation of the inks for comparison.  Do you use a qtip or a brush?

This was one of the first green inks I bought that I actually ended up liking.  Unfortunately, it has a tendency to fade, and become more of a murky grey-green, over time.

I spread a bit of ink with the end of a plastic pen holder.

Thank you!  I had not though of that before.  I will have to experiment.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
