I am bought my Waterman Le Man 100 at Fahrney's in Washington DC in 1983 and I have be writing with it throughout the ensuing years.  I enjoy the size of the grip and weight of the pen in my hand.  Will I ever find another pen that I like as much!?  I am now beginning to expand my collection, adding a TWSBI  and a Penlux, with a Waterman Carène Amber on the way.  Also playing around with an assortment of less expensive pens (Jinhao, HongDian).  Looking forward to the conversations!  Thanks.

Welcome from another New Englander. Sounds like you are just starting to get really "Keene" (a NH pun) on fountain pens. Hope you will think seriously about coming to the Commonwealth Pen Show in September (Sunday the 12th) in Somerville, MA. In the past we have had a nice crowd and a really great group of sellers.

Also, be sure to check out our local pen group, the Boston Pen People. BTW, the secret password is... Sorry, you will have to PM me. (that's private message, btw)

Again, welcome...

Thanks, everyone!  Just learning to navigate this site and I'm not sure if I can reply to specific posts.  Will try to get to the Boston area for the show in September.  By the way, I'm looking into sending my Waterman away for repairs and am feeling trepidatious about letting it go without being sure I'll get it back.  I am waiting to hear back from Ron at Main Street Pens; I guess that can take a while.  Any advice?  Gloucesterman:  is Bromfield Pen still brick and mortar or only online?  Thanks again.

Bromfield is brick and mortar with a new and expanded online presence. They were bought (I think) by Appelboom (from the Netherlands) a while ago. They may also be at the show along with, I think, Federalist Pens and, I hope,  several other full range B&M vendors.

Ron Zorn is great but he is way backed up -- like all the pen repairers I have contacted. He's got a couple of mine right now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
