Hello from Texas! (…and a question)

Good morning! I have been a fountain pen user for several years now but just joined this forum today. Good to be among those who share my addiction! 🤣

Current pens:

Pilot Metropolitan

Lamy Al Star

Moonman M2

TWSBI GO

Jinhao X750

Sheaffer Targa

Kaweco Al Sport

I’ve attached a photo of my great-grandfather. I’m hoping someone can help me identify the writing instruments in his breast pocket.

Thanks, all!

 Jon

Hello Jon, and welcome :)

What a great picture - do you have any idea where/when it was taken? That would help a lot in narrowing down the search a little.

I know it’s a small thing, but I would love to figure out the writing instruments and procure a set. I journal daily and keep his picture on my desk. I have so little connection to my great-grandfather, though his first name, Abram, is my middle name. He was a minister and died of tuberculosis while yet in his 30s. But my grandmother loved her daddy so much that she wrote a biography of his short life. She was in her 80s at the time and very close to passing herself.

Welcome to FPN!  I looked at the photo but could not determine much...other than one on the left appears to be a a fountain pen typical of the period (Duh!?!?). Having made such a profoundly astute observation, I will leave the identification to someone who hopefully can recognize something with the clips of two writing instruments that might suggest a brand name.  What is cool about owning a vintage pen is knowing that it comes from a specific period of time.  Your photo drives that realization home for me.  I have a couple of early Sheaffer "flat tops" that are from or slightly before the period of your photo.  I will look at them a bit differently now...

I agree! I love being connected to the past, always have. I have a beautiful oak bedroom set that’s been in my family for over a hundred years. My people have been conceived, lived, and died in this bed. Writing with a fountain pen has become such a source of joy to me that I want to incorporate it with love of family and love old things. The only old pen I have is a Sheaffer Targa given to me by an old man I’ve recently gotten to know. Interestingly, it’s the best writer I have. Fountain pens seem to be capable of putting the lie to what C.S.Lewis called “chronological snobbery”. 🤣

I suggest you begin the quest for a pen or two made before 1930.  Since Abram Snyder was a pastor, he probably was not extravagant in his purchases so a modest fountain pen of good utility would likely fit his style.  Look at some of the modest Sheaffers and even Wearevers from that period, for example.  As to C. S. Lewis, I don't think he would be surprised at the shape of things today... disappointed, yes, but not surprised.  BTW, we have a condo down in the Montgomery-Conroe area and enjoy (read appreciate, value, cherish, etc.) the more traditional social norms exhibited there very much.

Because not everyone looks in here, I would post your picture on the specific forum for US-made pens, where one of the resident experts may be more likely help with identification. Good luck in your quest.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
