Safari & Preppy, seal' Mechanism test.

I tested sealing mechanisim of two pens. Lamy Safari & Platinum Preppy.

I filled the ink and checked the amount. And Let stand for a month(30days) with the lid up.

When using cartridges, There was no difference compared to a month ago.

But using converter, A small amount of ink has evaporated.

May be thats because the converter seems to have a slightly weaker sealing power than the cartridge I think.

Anyway, Lamy & Preppy have great cap-sealing performance.

I hope this could make Safari & Preppy users more happy.

(sorry for my English I used translator)

Thank you, it is a very helpful post.

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

The sealing of both pens  is very good, almost no ink evaporation. After one month  how the pens start writing?

One month is kind of where I would say any good cap seal should reliably hang out. I've got dozens of pens that can do that.

The platinum slip-n-seal is advertised to work for something like one or two years.

So a 6-12 month continuation of this experiment would interest me.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

It was as soft as it was an hour ago.

I can do better, try close to 4 years and counting.

I have a Plaisir dedicated to this experiment. The pen is stored in a pen tray in a drawer in the study.

I write half a page every quarter and still on the initial cartridge.

It came about as I had no use for the pen and instead decided to test it's 'slip-n-seal' attribute.

The last check was in June 2021.

No hard starts, either?

On one or two occasions, 10-15 secs dip in water was needed.

It could be due to temp. fluctuations in the study or when the pens were stored in a different location.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
