New (to me) 400 tortoise

Just received my 400 tortoise. I believe this to be the 400nn (correct me if I’m wrong). It cam3 with the matching mechanical pencil and leather case, so a nice set. The plunger is a bit stiff so I will lightly lube it but it writes like a dream. Has an EF nib. Next I’m going for a 100. 😎

I’m going by the cap shape thinking nn. I’m new to this though so I’m confident the experts will chime in.

My 140 is green striated and the 400nn tortoise. Now I need to see what colors are available with the 100 and decide which to go for.

What a great set you've scored, those tortoise stripes look grand.

I'm hoping for 400nn just like that one day. Cheers.

Lovely 400NN (and 450)! That is a really nice looking specimen and it is great that it is a part of a matching set. Those 450 are wonderful too, I love how solid they feel in hand.

Very nice set.  I think my next bird will be a 400nn tortoise. I already have a 400 green.

Congratulations, this is a beautiful set!!

You might also want to consider acquiring a vintage 400.  I prefer the vintage 400 over the 400nn but that is 100% personal preference and nothing more.  Both are wonderful fountain pens.

Some of the colors of the 100s are really breathtaking.  But, brace yourself, so are their prices!!

Good luck!

Yes, it is.....and don't forget it.  There are some sellers who will try to convince you otherwise.

Depending upon where you live, you might want to try to get to a pen show where you can see and try the FPs for yourself.  You can get a great education if you go there with that intent and not the intent to necessarily make a purchase.  You'll also meet some terrific sellers at the show who have little to no online presence.  Many of them offer the education and more favorable prices...both at no extra charge!!!  😉

yes, 400NN.

After the launch of the Pelikan 400 (which looks rather similar to the modern M400), Pelikan made the 400N (N stands for Neu, i.e. new) but just a couple of years later they replaced the 400N with the 400NN (so the name stands for 400 new new... :)).

Consequently the 400N is a rare pen, however the 400NN is much more elegant.

As a matter of fact in my opinion it is perhaps the most elegant Pelikan ever made.

A lovely pen, both in tortoise finish and in the more common green.

Or "nagelneu" (brand-new, literally nail-new, but whatever)!

I wondered what the nn stood for. Thanks!

"Nagelneu". 😂 Never even thought of that! But that sums it up pretty nicely. Thank you for a good laugh.

I have both the semi-flex 400NN OF and the 450 in green stripe.

All my life (50 years of scribbling) I hated mechanical pencils (Jotters and cheaper)....then one day by mistake that 450 MP landed in my hand....great balance. I didn't touch a fountain pen for 6 weeks until I ran out of lead....took me a while to get back into fountain pens.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
