Hello from Virginia! & Really Really Need some help!

Hello, I am Richard from Charlottesville, Virginia, and I am currently a 3-rd year undergraduate student.

I am really a newbie in calligraphy and fountain pens. It has been almost 10 years since I last used fountain pens in my elementary school. Generally speaking, I think my handwriting is legible but it is not aesthetic and stable, which really bothers me. The first attached picture is my current handwriting. Recently, as I am having some free time during the summer break, I made up my mind to systematically learn to write English more consistently and more beautifully. After doing a little bit research, I found cursive italic seemed to be the one that really captured my heart, which I thought should be the one in the red box in the second attached picture (credit to Caliken). I have read the post below, in which several friends suggested some books: "Write Now" by Getty & Dubay, Tom Gourdie's "Italic Handwriting" or "Handwriting for Today", Italic Letters: Calligraphy and Handwriting by Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty, and Caliken's "Italic Variants". Do these books serve a good guidance for starters to learn cursive italic? I really hope I could get some guidance on where I should start.

Also, is it possible that I could get some recommendations on pens that are fit for cursive italic? I am currently using Pilot G2 Gel Pens with a nib size of 0.7mm.

Really appreciate any suggestions.

Sincerely,

Richard W.

Greetings from a sunny and hot Vancouver BC, and :W2FPN:

Richard, your handwriting is perfectly legible. Interestingly, I understood much of your writing about database design -- before I retired a few months ago my work involved IT (Information Technology). Good luck with your learning.

Cheers, Anthony.

Welcome to FPN. I'm glad to see that you are enjoying fountain pens.

I suggest that you head over to Reddit's handwriting forum: https://www.reddit.com/r/Handwriting/

If you post something there and ask for a critique, they will offer lots of helpful suggestions. There are also links to handwriting books that are in the public domain.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Not a huge fan of reddit, but I will try this time. Thank you very much.

Richard-n the book by Getty and Dubay, titled, "Write Now" provides very good instruction in the modern italic style. I use the book extensively, especially after I suffered numerous strokes a few years back that left my right side paralysed. As I have recovered, I had to relearn to write with a fountain pen, and  Write Now was the book folks in the fountain pen community recommended.

Best of luck.

Hi, @WindyDay1056

Welcome aboard!  Your handwriting is perfectly legible, even nice.  You should easily be able to learn italic.   The key to consistency is speed, slant, and spacing.

Do you have any italic nib pens?  Lamy and TWSBI Eco are fine for learning, and inexpensive.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've used Getty and Dubay and I agree it's good. I do actually slightly prefer Fred Eager's Italic Way to Beautiful Handwriting, though--I think his italic model is a little nicer looking.

A belated welcome to FPN. Your handwriting is quite nice, unlike mine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
