I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

A friend of mine was complaining several years ago that after booking a hotel room in some resort area, her FB feed was FLOODED with hotel ads for the same area.  And she said "I can't sleep in more than one hotel room at a time!" And when my husband was doing research online for a previous job (at the Naval Nuclear Labs) suddenly he was inundated with ads in his FB feed for, well, women's swimwear....

The flip side of course is the school library somewhere a few years ago where their software preventing the kids from inadvertently find porn sites was ALSO blocking research int breast cancer treatments....

AI isn't going to take over the world anytime soon.  Last night I was trying to get a live person on a communications company's badly coded chat window and their bot thought my name was "NEITHER".  Of course, when I DID get a live person he was so useless he could just as *easily* have actually been another bot....

My best story about FB adds (my wife's, really), happened years ago, when I got intrigued about what the feed of a twenty-something years old woman would look like in terms of ads. I also did this because I was annoyed at FB telling all my friends about my birthday and having to thank people for a ton of utterly meaningless and empty "happy birthday" notes.

So I went ahead and changed my gender and age (it was still possible to do it back then).

My feed didn't change radically.

Then, one day my wife and I were chatting about online privacy and I told her what I had done and she almost screamed that no wonder she was being BOMBARDED with ads for gay cruises, magazines, and what-not. She couldn't understand what the *$#($@#&* was wrong with Facebook!

My wife and I also tried this with our formerly internet-connected digital home thermostat.
The manufacturer recommended logging the devices onto our home internet for updates and maintenance.
So in the first week, we did that.
The very same day we started getting ads popping up in our email, on Facebook, recommendations on Amazon...everything.
And all things we had been talking about in the new house. Being that the only internet-connected devices were the thermostats...we knew the culprit.
We tested it by talking about "Hamsters" non-stop and sure as flies on s#!+.....we started getting "Hamster" targeted advertising on EVERYTHING!
The devices were taken off the internet immediately and then removed from our home and replaced with analog thermostats.
Digital everything is going to be the death of everything...

I've pretty much run out of stickmen, but I have a few more "drawings" from times past and other forums...  Someone mentioned centripetal force...

Message to @LizEF. (Note to self: Use a faster drying ink for the future stick figures.)

There was an earlier topic I wanted to send up with a drawing, but the outline of the map of Ireland is very challenging to recognisably render freehand, and I was afraid someone may take the message to be political when I have absolutely no interest or leaning in the Irish Question.

Indeed it did. Voice recognition, proximity sensors, remote monitoring...the works.
Kick in the butt for me selecting the top-of-the-line tech (at the time we built the house 3 years ago) for the house.
🙄

Shouldn't have done that...

Wow.  Honestly, I'm kinda glad I'm slightly paranoid.  I like single-function, low-tech, few-moving-parts devices. :)

I had to beat back both the guys who upgraded our irrigation system ("are you sure you don't want a WiFi connected rain sensor?") and the guys who installed our new garage door ("but look! you can open your garage door with your phone! Are you sure you don't want it?"). No.  No Nest, no Alexa, no toasters/fridges/light switches to spy on us, no Internet of Things at my house, thank you.

You all are indeed wise for avoiding connecting all of your home functions to the internet.
I can honestly say that it is universally a horrid idea from my initial and only experience with it.
I will keep as many items I own "DUMB" for as long as possible...lol.

Wait!  @Frank C, how exactly do you know I wear glasses?

I've watched—and commented on—a few youtube videos. The real question is: How did I know Makhabesh wears glasses, too?

  OK, I know you've commented on them there.  Maybe my avatar?  (I've certainly never shown my face in a video.)  As for Makhabesh, I prefer to let folks imagine him how they will, so it's all good.

:D  Here's stick-Liz wondering how a single stalk of corn (I think) came to be growing right next to her air conditioner:

Isn't your avatar you? It is how the world sees you. I am morphing into a stick figure, even as I write.

Of course, that may be Makhabesh's mother, but I think that she wears bifocals.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
