xkcd.com is meeting some serious competition here!

Alex

I think you're right!  I don't read xkcd on a regular basis, but some of the ones I've seen have been really funny (but I suspect you have to be a geek or be friends with geeks to appreciate them).

Some of the ones in this thread I've shown my husband, and it's the same thing to some extent -- he's been around me and around the hobby, just enough to recognize the humor even when he's not busting out laughing the way I am.

:lticaptd:I'm now imagining the reaction of the people at the next table (e.g. in a restaurant) when they overhear a pair of FP users talking about their cleaning routine...

And I'm now thinking back to a year or so back when I was trying to decide what nib to get on my first Sailor pen (the Purple Cosmos Pro-Gear Slim) and realized that I could call up my friend Karl, who is trying to get one of every model Sailor pen that he can.  My husband and I drove up to his house and went to dinner at a "nicer" level restaurant than I sometimes go to, and we were geeking about pens and inks while I was playing with the zoom nib on one of his pens (he couldn't find the one with the music nib on it).

Of course my husband was probably feeling the way I do often at the "Wednesday night dinners" we used to go to pre-COVID, which were run by the guy who was his best man at our wedding.  The talk would devolve into computer and software stuff (one person is the chief software architect for a health insurance company and I'm surprised she hasn't gone postal on some of the idiots she has to work with), until my eyes would start to glaze over....

We need more! :D  Someone meant to write "final security" (I think it was meant to be "final", but they typed "finial")...

What was your last impulsive pen acquisition? This was Arthur's.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Haha, that's more like the reaction I expect from my jokes!

I hate Parker Sonnet pens — and we still have two, after I gave a third one away decades ago — and, to a large extent, it's because their caps are invariably useless at preventing ink evaporation, because they're not airtight. From reading the Sonnet ink evaporation fix thread, it seems that the inner cap shouldn't vent into cavity between that and the exterior metal cap but does anyway, and the gap in the cap finial then just makes continuous evaporation inevitable.

Sounds like my Waterman Kultur, only it doesn't even have an inner cap.

I'm afraid you're going to have to edit that post and reinsert the inline image. Editing the description of the gallery image after posting it causes its URL to be regenerated (and changed), thus breaking the posts in which the image was already embedded and/or linked.

 I'm confuzzled.  When I go to the post, I see the inline image.  I can click on it to get the overlay window, then click again and it opens in a new tab...  If I click the "up-right arrow" in this thread, it takes me to my post, showing the image...

I understand. Your browser is presenting you with the image retrieved from its local cache on your device. If you left-click to open the image in a new tab or window, then go to that and refresh the resource, it should then either report an HTTP error message or present you with a placeholder for a broken image.

Thank you - for the original notification and for continuing with me!  All fixed.  I opened the link in a different browser, and that confirmed the error.  I hate modern browsers.  In the good old days, a simple Ctrl + F5 would force the page to refresh everything, pulling nothing from the cache.  For whatever reason, this no longer works (all the time) and I find it extremely frustrating.

No problem. I experienced it early on, I experimented with it, I reported it to Wim and it's something that he's taking up with the software platform provider (but obviously is on the backburner, what with the issues with ads and classifieds the past few months), and arrived at a workaround and a sense of caution. I know the problem when I see it because I've tripped over it myself several times, that's all.

Yeah, I'll remember from now on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
