Rohrer and Klingner sketchINK® Frieda

Rohrer and Klingner sketchINK® Frieda

These pigmented inks are purported to be both lightfast and waterproof and are designed for sketching.

For more details check
vojtahlad and  LizEF excellent and detailed reviews.

Like other inks of this series, Frieda is wet. Dry time is on the longer side, it's for sketching after all smile.png

I prefer this series with modern flex, where I get more character out of these inks. However, it is imperative to use pens with a good seal, otherwise you need dip your nib under water to keep it running again. I have had another one of this series in a Pilot Varsity for almost a year. The only times I had hard starts was when the pen was nib side up. However, in Lamy Safari/Ahab and many other pens it dries up if not used regularly.

• Pen used: Noodler’s Ahab
• Shading: Yes with flex
• Ghosting: None
• Bleed through: None.
• Flow Rate: Wet
• Lubrication: Nice
• Nib Dry-out: Depending the pen. Needs well sealed pen.
• Start-up: If not used it can dry out, in pens with high evaporation.
• Saturation: Saturated
• Shading Potential: Only in flex
• Sheen: No
• Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None.
• Nib Creep / “Crud”: None
• Staining (pen): Did not recall
• Clogging: Yes. If left in poorly sealed pens, yes.
• Water resistance: Waterproof /Lightfast
• Availability: Only in bottle 50 ml bottles.

Thanks for posting the review. I haven't tried these sketchinks—there are just so many inks out there. This one is interesting, though . . . .

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

:D Love it, @yazeh!  Doesn't look as blue (on my screen) as I remember it - but it turns out my memory is bad - when I do a screen capture and compare the colors in your images to mine, they're nearly identical.  :)

Great review @yazeh - you're making me want to buy sketching inks now. And I really, really don't need to be wanting whole new series!

I do very much like the colour of this one.

Thanks for this nice review. I especially like your long listing of parameters and their personal ratings. IMO, sketchINKS are better than their reputation (noted by others). As you pointed out, all one has to do with these inks as a precaution is make sure that the pen used here has a tight-fitting cap and/or that the pen isn't lying around unused for any length of time. Otherwise one can always use R&K's cleaning solution (reiniger), which is well suited for such inks.

Most welcome.  There are two many indeed. These are whimsical series, and at a good price.

Thanks    I wanted to showcase it's range with a flex nib.

Thanks mizgeorge. Get samples.  The shading appears only with flex/wide nib combinations. Otherwise it might look flat with some pens.

Most welcome. I totally agree. People are often afraid of waterproof inks, because of the warnings. If you have a good seal you're fine.  And even then ;)

The color, your beautiful writing, and your great review tempt me to want to buy Frieda. Many of those sketchINKSs are attractive, Frieda definitely included.

 You're so kind. I love them too.

Great review.

Reminds me a lot of 54th Massachusetts, which I have been recently tempted to try again 😬

Thank you, yazeh!

A well done review and I like your test on the paper a lot!

However, I use most of the Sketch Inks and I remember Frieda to be a more 'dark-greyish-blue'. I used Frieda and Lilly in Lamy Vistas without any drying issues - indeed, I emptied each fill within 2-4 weeks.

Looking forward to more Sketch Ink reviews.

One life!

Good to know.I had super5 to dry a bit in Safari. Now I'm testing Jule, we'll see.

Okay, okay, seeing as how Noodler's cropped up, do you mean your 5th or 54th original bottle of it  ?  :lticaptd::lticaptd::lticaptd::lticaptd::lticaptd:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
