aloha from poipu, kauai & buying a nib for a Nemosine Fission

Poipu Pen

Recommended Posts

I'm on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. I live in Poipu where i can walk 3 minutes to stand on some rocky cliffs overlooking the open ocean.

I have a Nemosine Fission pen w/ a #6, fine nib. Also, a Pilot Metropolitan Collection pen w/ a medium nib. I'm finding I need to start writing again with a fountain pen to slow down. I'm a retired as an IT Manager and was a former librarian. I feel the need to start getting back to non-electronic, non-intellectual practices. Unplug.

Anyone have suggestions for purchasing a broad nib for my Nemosine Fission?

I searched the "Of Nibs & Tines" forum but no luck w/ seller info.

I also like to throw stuff on the wheel and practice Hawaiian slack key guitar. ☮️

Hello and welcome :)

I'm pretty sure the Nemosine Fission takes a #6 JoWo nib, and these are pretty widely available - many pen retailers, pen turners supply shops, ebay and etsy will all have them in a range of widths - the B is OK, but I have to admit I prefer their 1.1mm stub ;)

btw. I love listening to Hawaiian slack key guitar - I wouldn't even know where to start with most of the chords, but love the end result!

He Punahele Nô `Oe – Island Music Network - is a waltz. Sweet song usually played at weddings and graduations for your baby girl. ❤️

Walter C, apologies, I'm not sure how to reply back to you ... I'm going to follow your link The Birmingham Pen Co. Everything's new: replying, looking up different pen companies, nib terminology ... fascinating and exciting. And confusing. :)  This is such a great forum w/ very cool people.

Interesting that Nemosine and Birmingham owners are brothers. Neat!

Thanks a heap!

And I twisted the nib about 1/8-1/4 then pulled out of the Nemosine. The problem I had was drawing ink into the cylinder. Tried holding the nib below the ink line, but ended up taking out the ink cartridge and placing the open end in the ink to draw the ink.

Oh, and I dropped the nib on white carpet right before trying to load ink into the cartridge. Luckily my significant other had Folex: instant spot remover--no rinse! Took it out, and will take out stains, too! [It wasn't an ink spot. It was a long, thin trail of ink.]

Thanks a heap!

Are you talking about just the nib, as in the piece of metal, or nib and feed assembly housed in a threaded plastic collar that screws into the gripping section on a Nemosine Fission?

Ink cartridge, as in a slender container of ink made of translucent plastic with no moving parts, or ink converter with a piston (which, in the case of the one supplied by Nemosine, is rotary-driven) to draw ink into it mechanically?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

It's the rotary-driven one provided by Nemosine. The nib is secured into the pen with the ink rotary-driven ink cartridge also secured in the pen. I couldn't draw ink with that setup. The only way I could draw ink into the cartridge was to take the ink cartridge out, submerge its tip into the ink.

I bought a new rotary-driven cartridge to see if it works with the nib and cartridge fitted into the pen housing.

I just received my order from Birmingham Pens. I am flabbergasted. I received a touching note with a handwritten signature, a sample piece of writing paper to test my nib on, an elegant postcard, and a small, square cork coaster with their company information. Two nibs, and an ink cartridge in resealable bags also elegant. Everything felt handled by caring hands. I was so touched. I hope they stay in business for a long time.

By the way, I just bought an Atkin acoustic guitar, double 0 body, 12 fret. The top was baked and it produced a loud, clear, balanced, sweet tone. I thought I was in heaven playing it. No electronics. It was made in the UK. An amazing instrument. Seems like the renaissance of the craftsman movement in England.

Thank you for tip re Birmingham Pens! :)

Aloha!! I was just thinking about what pens to bring on vacation when we come to Hawai'i in August, but my more important question: any recommendations for good pen/stationary stores on Kauai? I love exploring for different products and new brands when I travel, so any guidance is welcome~

Welcome! And welcome back to things analog and human-paced. I'll have to check out Birmingham Pen Co. based on your experience! This string also prompted me to look again at the beautiful pens from Kanilea Pen Co., which is mainland-based but certainly seems infused with the Hawaiian spirit!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
