Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Red Dragon

This is review #108 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy.  The color is somewhere in all those images - none is too far off.  This is a nice enough color with a cool enough name that you should just get some and try it for yourself! :D If you like the color, but not the dryness, of Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot, this is a good alternative.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great job as usual Liz.

I can see some shading in the close up, though.  I never knew feathering could become hairy :D

P.S. I dreamt of Makhabesh, appearing on the Enterprise as a spacial anomaly and befuddles Data by telling him under no certain terms that he prefers Apple to the android he is, and wants to go on a date with Spot to see what's all the fuss about wingless Sphinxes ;)

Nice! I too would vote for a good hand-out of the actual colour. I'm not all that into reds, I do use it occasionally and it is a good rendition of fresh (okay, just coagulated) blood on paper. I.e. not too much brown....

Yeah, but good luck seeing it with your eyes alone!  Maybe on TR or another super-shading paper, but I didn't even notice it there.

:) It seems more hairy (or sometimes fuzzy) than feathery to me.

 Nice description.  People are all the time looking for bloody inks, and dragon's blood seems even better!

Thank you as always Liz for another excellent review :) I find them incredibly soothing to watch.

I also use few red inks - though I've recently bought a few more to play with, but have always quite liked Red Dragon - especially compared to the seemingly more popular Oxblood, which I've always found a bit too rusty looking. Of the Diamine reds, I think I still prefer Wild Strawberry or more recently Tulip though - both are a bit fresher and less bloody somehow, and despite how much I like the name, I don't think I will be repurchasing it.

I'm disappointed to see the results on poor quality paper - I've never tried it on anything like that, but I imagine it would make using it as a mark-up ink less attractive. Though I believe red is rarely used for marking these days as it's considered too hostile.

Thanks for the review. Diamine Red Dragon lives permanently in Platinum #3776 Century Kanazawa-haku ‘Shoryu’ (‘Ascending Dragon’) that has a very stiff and precise F nib. I prefer it to Diamine Oxblood when I want to get the bloody message across.

However, I still want to see what Diamine Silence of the Lambs looks like; although if such an ink existed, I might have to hunt down a now discontinued Platinum Vicoh ‘Sheep’ pen with which to permanently pair it.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Wild Strawberry is one I've often thought of trying, but never got around to.  Maybe one day. :)

Oh, I dunno, at least the markup itself would be interesting, and it would be hard for anyone to believably alter your markup... ;)

🐲 🐉 ROOOAAAARRRR!!  🔥  A bloody red dragon has marked your errors!  You may choose between learning and turning your self-esteem into ash.  Choose wisely! ::missing holy grail emoji::  (Yes, I'm a wee bit opinionated on the topic....)

Note to the admins: We need red dragons, not just green ones.  Also, could we get a chalice, goblet, holy grail emoji?  Thanks!

You're welcome, and thanks for the sample! :D  How appropriate!  [google image search . . . . . Holy dragon pen, Batman!  That's a serious pen.]

😱 [googling . . . . lots of variety on what pen that might be.  I'll assume the leather one.  Seems appropriate.]  Meanwhile, maybe with a little campaigning, the next reddit r/fountainpens ink from Diamine could be named "Silence of the Lambs" - I wonder if there's a copyright / trademark concern there...  Maybe we could call it "Silink of the Lambs"...

That is one wooly dragon.

I had a sample of this, but it was so long ago that I only remember liking the color.  If it shaded, I'd be tempted to buy a bottle.

Thanks for the review! 'Oily magic'....🤣

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Wild Strawberry is the red I use the most of all (of any brand). Apart from that I've always found that Diamine's Poppy Red is practically identical. Don't know of any other two colours from one and the same company which look sooo  identical.

Thanks for the review!

Were those airplanes or dragons circling overhead?

Diamine Red Dragon was one that taught me the importance of buying samples before committing to full bottles.

I think dragons wouldn't have sounded quite so annoying.

I really wish I'd learned the samples lesson sooner!

Looks like nice dark red. Never tried it before, but I do have a small 15 ml bottle of it. I think my Edison Collier Red Dragon pen has found its soulmate 😉

Oh yes!  Those two definitely need to get together. :)  And your poor untested bottle deserves at least a try.

I find reds more fun in thicker nibs. Though it depends on whether I am getting shading. A fat nib with no shading and a soft look to the lines is not so much fun. My Skrip Red does not really shade.

I think it depends on your preferences and purposes - EFs are great for mark-up, as are red (and other bright inks).  Fortunately, we have such variety (in inks and FP-users both) that we'll never run out of interesting combinations! :)

Just noticed a bit of gold sheen on this ink on Tomoe River paper (in my Hobonichi, where I keep my ink log). :)  So, if you like a bit of sheen with your red, you can go for this and a wet nib...

Like the colour but not the mono-tone. Went for KWZ Red.

Add lightness and simplicate.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
