Can anything be done with an inlaid section?

A while back, my father sent me a broken Imperial. It looks like the section cracked right where it joins the body, and the filling system is seized up with old ink. I looked at it today, and there is a big chunk missing out of the section. But the nib is still okay.

Can anything be done with it? Anybody want to try something with it? I don't think the rest of the pen can be salvaged. I'm going to try a closer look at the filling tomorrow.

The nib itself has tabs that are embedded in the plastic at each corner - two at the peak, one on each side at the open end.  There is no non-destructive way to take the nib out and transfer it to another shell.    Touchdown or cartridge/converter?  Color?   I'm assuming touchdown...   Nib units from C/C pens with the plastic thread  bushings can be used in TD pens by swapping out the thread bushing - change the 0-ring while doing it, and use thread sealant on the threads to hold it in place.   The plastic thread C/C nib units were used in pens like the Compact Imperials.   The nibs with metal thread bushings have a totally different internal design, and the feeds and thread bushings are not interchangeable, nor will the nib fit in the older pens.

Thank you Ron. That's what I figured.

Touchdown filler. And the nib section itself is broken at the threads.

Are you suggesting that I could use a c/c nib unit, and if I can get the touchdown system cleaned and fixed, I could still have a pen?

Will the touchdown system work through a c/c nib unit?

The other way around...  if you find a C/C pen with plastic threads,  the thread bushings can be swapped out, and the nib used in your TD pen.  The barrel of the TD pens were made for the TD filler, so the tube gets in the way, and even if you took it out I would assume that there isn't room for a cartridge.

I see, thank you.

In the previous post, you mentioned thread sealant. Would shellac work for that? Or is it another substance to hunt down?

Thank you for your help.

I suspect @Ron Z meant the rosin based thread sealant

(2nd item on Ron’s page)

I have a product that is a rosin based thread sealant that I suspect is nearly identical. It is much easier to work with/undo than shellack is.

I’ll gladly accept correction if I am wrong WRT what Ron was talking about.

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
