New urushi pens from Rue du Stylo

I am making more and more urushi pens. I love it, so many techniques, so many looks and possibilities...

A friend of mine told me he thought a pen should be three things: sober, classy and black. I tried to go down this route with a timeless shape, some glossy jet black urushi and a sculpted Damascus clip:

Let my now introduce Count Dracula's pen. I tried to make a contrast as strong as possible between the glossy red in relief and a black textured ground. A bloody pen!

I embedded some red Kyoto opal at each end:

I go on exploring facets. This is an interpretation of a traditional Japanese style called Negoro, usually red on black. This one is black on red, then sanded to make the red reappear:

I added some fine red urushi powder near the threads to make it more vibrant:

The last one is supposed to remind of tortoise shell, with silver flakes embedded in amber lacquer, looking like gold. This one comes with a roll stop, a pen rest, and a pen-looking miniature , in fact a cartridge box, in case of emergency...

For each of them, around two or three months work (turning, threading, shaping the clip if any, and lacquering: between 20 and 40 layers, innumerable sanding and polishing hours.

Enjoy!

I don't do urushi.  At all.  But I'd buy the Dracula pen before I'd buy one of those new Sailor KoP "wabi-sabi" ones.

I do really like the Damascus clip on the black pen, BTW....

Those are great.   I love the carved black on red one.

The pen is mightier than the sword unless someone stabs you with the sword.

Geez, each of these pens deserves it's own thread!

The black pen does look like something I would love to use at work: understated but elegant with a little something extra if you look close.

The blood pen is unique and eyecatching, very goth. The opal flecks at the ends are a great touch, I would love to see them on a more subdued pen (like the black one...).

The negoro pen looks good, though personally I don't really like facets.

I love the tortoiseshell, the amber looks deep and the gold flecks are a great addition, especially the way they work with the pattern.

The cartridge pill is an interesting extra, though I'm not sure where it "goes", if that makes sense? Do you put it in you pocket just like that, or leave it on you desk and assume it won't roll off? Like, if it WAS the pen rest, or fit into the pen rest somehow, so it felt more "integrated"... well, that would make a little more sense to me is all.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Count Dracula is now on its way to a new home, I could soon start making a new one, a bit different but based on the same idea. I try to make pens in a style as personal as I can, and it is always a pleasure to see people like it.

I made it as sort of a joke, like a dwarf pen supposed to belong to your traveler's kit. But making a pen rest of it is indeed a much better idea, thanks, I will work on that!

Beautiful pens. That Count Dracula is drool worthy. The whole design and colour scheme is amazing, great work. I am always jealous and amazed at people's talents and skills and I am feeling a lot of both with this pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
