Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: De Atramentis Document Urban Grey

This is review #105 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: I really liked this grey.  The warmish color really doesn't show well in the images, and they make it seem darker than it seems to my eyes.  The zoom seems to have a greenish tint, but not the ink.  The smudge in the dry time has the slightest hint of brown (in real life), but the ink isn't muddy or dirty-looking.  Hard to describe.  Get some and try it out! :) Cleaning was surprisingly easy with only plain water.  Took a little longer than usual, but not much.  No staining, but the sample vial for this looks to be stained, so I would expect a longer stay to lead to staining or more difficult cleaning.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Great Job!

This one seems really nice Liz and I don't like greys . But the lines seem crisper than that $%X& Lemon grass. (Sorry I used a bit Sphinxy language). Despite the hairy feathery line on absorbent paper ;) :D

Yeah, I was really surprised by this one.  I've only ever liked cool greys before, but I really like this one, despite the long dry time.  It's one of those je ne sais quoi scenarios.

Definitely.

:lticaptd:  (For the record, I've already recorded the video where I mention the language of the sphinxes.)

Yeah, it's pretty rare for anything to do well on that absorbent paper.  I think the color variation (splotchiness) makes it look worse than it is on copy paper, and without magnification, I imagine most folk would think it behaves perfectly on copy paper.

Thanks as always Liz :)

Fab review of an ink I like a lot. In fact, I like most of the de Atramentis document inks - with the grey green just edging this one out for first place.

It's one of my go-to inks for filling out forms and anything that might be exposed to the weather, and seems to be accepted as a 'black ink' for official documents too (certainly in the UK).

Thanks!  I love pushing the boundaries of (now) senseless rules! :D

Very very appealing gray!  It goes down so beautifully, too.  But with that egregiously long dry time...well, you right-handers enjoy it.  🙂

Thanks for the review!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

How cool, a document ink that isn’t black, but an interesting grey.  This might be the document ink I’ll eventually get. Many thanks for all your reviews Liz.

This performed much better than DAD Black did!  You're very welcome! :)

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 330µm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
