After a slew of steel nib pens (Muji, Kaküno, Metropolitan, Preppy, Prefounte, 1911, etc) I finally got my first Japanese gold nib pen: a Pilot Custom Heritage 91, with a lovely SFM nib. I absolutely adore it.

I'm eyeballing a Sailor Pro Gear (Slim) next.

What is this money pit obsession hole I have fallen into?

I especially like that black 1911 Realo.

Sorry, but isn't the clear blue pen a Shikiori Hisakata Uchimizu, which is in the Procolor 500 product line instead of the Profit (aka 1911) product line? (The metal cap ring on Profit, or 1911, models does not reach the rim of the cap.)

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Thank you. That's probably correct. I shall update my info.

I'm usually quite boring and conservative in my pen choices, but I'm absolutely loving all these pens. Waaaaaw.

When I lost a pair of Montblanc La Bohemes (fp & bp, not matching) all fairly new in a new case -- fell out of my pocket in the five-minute walk to the subway in New York -- I managed my mixed feelings (self-upbraiding for carelessness mostly, but who thinks a double-pen case will fall out of one's pocket without one's noticing?) by imagining that a person who was having a bad day or a bad month really needed to have a happy experience at that moment. I mean, as long as speculation was the only option. So, I hope that whoever has your pen cherishes it.

I hesitate to mention given how well you dealt with the loss but did you consider that you may have been pickpocketed? Subway stations, especially when crowded, are prime hunting grounds for pickpockets.

Regardless, kudos for dealing with it positively.

omg! this is so impressive - makes me jealous 😍 do you keep them all uninked or do you use them for writing? I love the look of people when you take a monster #50 out of the pouch to sign/take notes

Sooooo many vintage Pilots.... lots of Platinums, more than several Sailors and a smattering of lesser known makers as well.

A solid few modern pens from the big three also, in total I'd venture a guess of 200-ish?

That's not counting parts and basket-case pens, just functional pens.

Oh yeah, about the "onward" part... I expect to keep accumulating variants of the pens I already have if they feature unusual nibs or some other novel feature,  some day I'd also like to re-acquire a Pilot Sterling silver Buddhist sutra; I bought one almost 20 years ago and sold it on as the $250 I paid was money I actually needed to pay my bills and the pen needed cleaning and tuning that I wasn't skilled enough to do back then (it would be a half hour project for me now). The fact that they usually go for $750+ now makes me sad.

I write with all my pens. Might have half a dozen inked up at any one time.

Do you use the Shijin, Chinkin Dragon and other Namiki Maki-e for writing too?

This ^^^^ !!

My sterling grid Plat with the platinum nib and 1930s celluloid Pilot are in rotation right beside much more humble Honests, Supers and E series pens, I even cleaned the chalk marks off of a NOS Sheaffer PFM II, to use it as an everyday writer.  Unless something was a legit museum piece I'd write with it. Don't get me wrong, truly scarce or valuable pens are less likely to go to work with me and interesting variants that aren't great writers gather more dust between inkings, but what's the point of having a writing instrument if you don't *write* with it?

As I read this topic I realize that I have a modest number of Japanese fountain pens :)

  • Sailor Pro Gear Slim (Blue Green Nebula) (F)
  • Sailor 1911 Large (MF)
  • Platinum #3776 Lauren Green (SF)
  • Pilot Custom 823 Amber (F)

All 4 are inked-up and ready to go.

Til now my collection of Japanese pen for daily use and collection are:

Sailor profit junior kurogane

Sailor 14k Promenade

Sailor FC85 from the 1930s

Unknown Sailor model with koi maki-e from the 1930s

Pilot 743 SFM

Pilot capless M

Ohasido not sure of the model

The next one would be a Tsuchida Shuichi's eyedropper

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
