Ehhh. personally I prefer "Battle of Evermore" from the same album, because "Stairway to Heaven" is one of those songs that got hyped out of existence on the radio in the 1970s (same way as Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album; I like the stuff on Wish You Were Here better).

Besides, Battle of Evermore is about the Battle of Five Armies in The Lord of the Rings.  And has Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention fame) doing backup vocals -- which makes it even MORE awesome....

Kashmir is my favourite Led Zeppelin song. Not for the lyrics, but for the music.

Listened to Battle of Evermore for the first time today. Brilliant!

Yup.  I do like "Kashmir" too, but "Battle of Evermore" is one of those songs that just send chills down your spine.

Years ago there was a girl in the amateur madrigal choir I'm in said that she wanted to grow up to be Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span.  I have MUCH higher aspirations -- I wanted to grow up to be Sandy Denny....

Sadly I did not get to see Fairport Convention in concert when she was still with them (although I was lucky enough to see them twice -- once in the mid-1980s at a folk club/coffeehouse about an hour north of where I grew up, and then once at a larger venue here in Pittsburgh, after I got married.

Heart does a pretty good job covering that one (and other LZ tunes):

Wow!  They certainly DO do a good job.  I wasn't familiar with that as being part of their repertoire.  Thanks for posting the link.

Covers are weird.  Sometimes you hear a cover of a song and go "OMG -- WHY?"  Sometimes the cover is actually way better than the original (think the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower" over the original)  I really always liked a lot of Bob Dylan stuff, but I HATE the original version he did of that song  And sometimes?  The cover version is so different I can't honestly decide which I like better (I've never actually heard the "original" version of "Hey Joe", but it's a serious tossup for me whether I like more: the Hendrix version (a slow blues) vs. the version that Love did (which is sort of jangly and frenetic, and which I think I actually heard FIRST, even though the Hendrix version is way better known).

Yeah, some covers become definitive while others make you wonder what the artist was on (and please don't give me any!). For Watchtower, I've got to go with Michael Hedges version from his Live on the Double Planet album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkKl81bgvOQ

And, to bring it back from the edge ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
