Hello everyone,

I was recently browsing eBay for Lamy Safaris and I notice some weird listings.

Aside from the ones at the beginning of this thread "Lamy Safari LOFT", there 4 Safari this year that look like a mish-mash of last year's limited edition.

I don't know if this is a "Brilliant Idea" of Lamy Japan or of some Japanese stationery store.

I like the purple one with the yellow trim and clip.

I don't particularly like the prices -- I see that all the eBay listings have shipping included, but those are still pretty steep even then.

Admittedly, I've only ever bought one pen directly from Japan, and that was a few years ago -- but at the time economy airmail shipping to the US was $13 US.  And took 10-14 days normally.  The vendor warned me that it might be longer, due to the time of year (I was ordering the pen around Thanksgiving), but it took 11 (it was in and out of US Customs in a matter of hours, and I was able to track the package via Japan Post before it got stateside, and then through the USPS after it got out of Customs.  And because I had to sign for it, the mailman was knocking on my front door on day 11.  Of course I presume that the shipping rates (and times) have gone up due to COVID.  But still....

The Safari pens made for the Japanese market are nice and quite different, but not easy to buy them. In few weeks the restrictions to travel in east Asia will be simpler. Maybe it will also  be a possibility to visit some pen stores in Tokio.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
