If you can get on with the even more extreme than a Safari grip section, they're a great everyday pen.

So far I like it.

I know it's a 'Beginners Pen' and all, but I like the colors.

Ten more Monami Penna pens arrived, in two separate packages, over the past 36 hours.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I'm now waiting for a new black Parker 51 with the gold nib.  I look forward to comparing it with my old 51.  I probably should ink up both at the same time and see how each feels.

Using right now:

Visconti Voyager 30 "M" nib running Birmingham Streetcar

Jinhao 9019 "EF" nib running Birmingham Railroad Spike

Stipula Adagio "F" nib running Birmingham Violet Sea Snail

Pelikan M1000 "F" nib running Birmingham Sugar Kelp

Yes, and you might consider using the same ink for both, too, to get a really good feel for the differences between them.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

This little (10cm) Stipula from Valentia in Italy:

1531358633_tiger2.jpg.cd8232419ea5e59a8715350398f9ba47.jpg

Arrived today at my workplace so haven't inked it yet but nib seems fairly smooth just stroking lightly across paper. Color is a bit more muted than the photo but may be due to the LED and fluorescent lighting here (also the section is a solid, sort of pumpkin-ish color, not matching like the photo) . Beautiful condition, especially the gold clip and cap rings.

The screw fittings appears to be brass; there are two, one extending from the section that screws into the barrel and one in the barrel that the section screws into with threads on the outside also where the screws on. Just over 3 full turns to unscrew the cap, and 10 to unscrew the section. There's no inner cap which may account for needing 3 turns to seal it.

The bulb converter has a metal casing with a pressure bar and appears to have a standard international opening, though the converter tapers from front to back rather than widening slightly like a cartridge does. I'll check when I get home to see if a cart will fit; I may have some Kaweco Sunrise Orange that might go better color-wise than, say, Kin-mosukei.

It is small, just under 4" capped and 3 3/4" uncapped. It does post, though I only tried it very gingerly as the threads in the cap come down almost to the edge and I'd hate to smush them but a little impractical trying to use it uncapped except for a scribble or two, though posted it's a comfortable 5 1/4". - I'll just have to remember not to mash it down.

Nothing on it to indicate it's a Stipula other than the nib embossing, which I thought to be a leaf but may instead be a feather.

eta: Though collar looks exactly the same, the opening is larger than on a standard cartridge. :(

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

  • 2 weeks later...

My little fleet of Sailors is growing! I just placed an order for a yellow Pro Gear.

It'll be the first PG to go with my three 1911L pens (Key Lime, Loch Ness, Burgundy Realo).

Thx. :)

The Good news: The slim models are not to my liking to use, based on my trying a PGS, no matter how nice they look. So I won't be tempted to collected those.

The Bad news:  The ones I want to collect are $272-$395 each. (and eventually up to KoP, at this rate)

This arrived Saturday afternoon.  I had people over and I kept looking at the package wanting to open it, or ask everyone to leave.  SO I waited.

Mont Blanc 246 BB nib.  It will need new cork.  Now to search for someone who does cork replacements.

I have a few Sailor PGS (Ocean, Midnight Sky, Shikiori Manyo) pens, which frankly I bought only because I couldn't resist the discounted prices on offer at the time, even though the combination of their size and shape does not make them my favourite Sailor pens to use, because they feel just a tad smaller than I like. Oddly, the (now discontinued) Sailor Promenade — which is equally as slim (if not slimmer… gotta check the published specs to know with certainty) — feels better.

Then I discovered the Sailor Pro Gear Slim Mini, which is shorter and surely no larger in terms of girth. For whatever reason, they feel ‘just right’, and so much better than the regular PGS. The ‘good news’ is that I only like the ones with the thread near the barrel finial for secure posting of the cap; the ‘old’ colours of that model are discontinued and essentially all sold out by now, leaving only the (in my opinion) extremely overpriced store-exclusive editions that I'm simply not prepare to pay for.

Still a damn shame I didn't ‘collect’ the mustard yellow and rose taupe variants as well last year when they were offered (in retrospect) so cheaply!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
