Pilot 912 FA nib troubles

Recommended Posts

Hi y’all.  I recently purchased a Pilot Custom 912.  It’s a lovely pen, but the nib skipped horribly.  I read here and elsewhere that skipping and railroading is a fairly common issue for these nibs.  To remedy it, I purchased and installed an ebonite feed from Flexible Nib Factory, as is frequently recommended.  The nib writes much better, but it didn’t fix the issue completely.  Even writing normally without flexing the tines, it’s still skipping and railroading occasionally.  Just enough to be annoying for everyday note taking and such.   The ink flow seems quite generous when it is working, so I don’t think it’s a feed issue.  Any ideas?  Is the FA nib just this finicky or should I contact Pilot and see if they‘ll replace it?

Change ink

My perfect no skip C743 FA sans FNF feed was skipping from gold KWZ IG and I could not figure out why

Turns out some blue ink residue in the back of my con-70 may have reacted with the KWZ to precipitate.

I switched back to non-IG and then no skips

then with a new converter of pure KWZ and tons of flushing back to perfection

When in doubt I always now try changing ink and paper versus messing with the pen's nib and feed and causing more troubles. It is waay easier and often fixes problems.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try.  I’ve got some Iroshizuku that should flow as good as anything.

How did a change of ink and/or paper work out for you? I'm thinking about purchasing the same pen but yours isn't the only post about a problematic FA nib I've seen.

What is this money pit obsession hole I have fallen into?

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Reminds me of the day my associates and I developed a cure for all mankind's ills and mistakenly wrote it down with invisible ink.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
