An awkward ramble of a hello

Hi!

I've recently decided to switch to fountain pens for environmental reasons. I've bought my first one and some black ink, but haven't started using it yet. I'm waiting until my last disposable pen runs out. Definitely not because I'm intimidated by it. I have weird rules about what things can be written in what colours (journal has to be black, Serious Notetaking has to be blue, anything self care related can be in blue, green, purple, or pink, etc) so I'll probably end up getting quite a few colours as I run through my current supply. And maybe one day if I'm super rich I'll buy myself an old fashioned writing desk, put on some historically inspired clothing (another recently picked up interest that hasn't got very far yet) and sit at it with my ink pot to do all my writing and pretend I'm living in the fantasy past without all the unpleasant parts of the real past.

As for writing-y things: I journal, I write letters (infrequently, I'm a terrible penpal), I write first drafts of novels by hand, and besides my main journal I have extra ones for a billion other aspects of my life. And in September I'll be making notes on classes again after a several year break.

I live in Scotland and am incredibly awkward at talking to people online and even worse in person. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hello from me too :)

This is an incredibly friendly and inclusive place, and everyone is  genuinely very welcome regardless of how how much they want to join in themselves, so feel free to just dip the occasional toe, or jump as it suits you.

That's practically on the equator, how do you live like that?! 😆 Everyone certainly seems lovely and I'm glad I was brave enough to make an account.

I'm meant to be moving to Glasgow this summer! I hear it's always cold and rainy, that's just its natural state.😉

Hi! So, what is this first pen waiting for its turn, if I may ask?

It's a Kaweko Perkeo. Being very new to this, I have no idea if that actually means much.

It's interesting! Anyway, Kawecos seem good according to reviewers. Now, you'll need at least two more fountain pens :)

And I like the 'environmental reasons', of course!

Welcome! Glad to have you here. You sound like you will fit right in. It's a large and diverse bunch with a fair number of us interested in, shall we say, older ways of doing things. Since I've been working at home for a year, I've yet to have to add ink to a fountain pen as my preferred means of writing with ink is now always at hand.

Cheers! and glad you've found us.

At least! I've been officially banned by the wife from buying notebooks when I don't 'need' them (what does she know anyway?) and I think it's just a matter of time before she does so with fountain pens and inks. She's already trying to suggest I can 'just get multiple inks and multiple cartridges you don't need more pens'.

  • 2 weeks later...

Welcome! I also joined recently and I can totally relate about the environmental reasons. Regardless of that, the hoarding has already started and it got me to think Why am I hoarding when one pen can last a lifetime. Anyway, colors are the fun part of writing

This got me laughing. Everyone has some weird parts in them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
