Well, I had the occasion once of seeing someone's fountain pen collection. Among them was a MB skeleton in yellow gold with the country's flag with diamonds and such precious stones providing the flag colours (thus enhancing the monetary value and price). My sense was that it was a LE of 1 produced to order. I learnt that it was a present. It had evidently not been used.

So some of these rather expensive pens are produced only to be given as gifts.

It may be VERY PRETTY…. But it’s still only a pen.

To be accurate I failed to appreciate it as a work of art, rather it appeared to me to be not a very good attempt at enhancing value via needless expensive additions. My limitations entirely I hasten to add, no reflection on the fine craftsmanship or the Montblanc brand

The owner it seemed to me saw it as something unusual appreciating the gesture implied by the gift, not something valuable and not a work of art. And indeed, only a pen, as you very rightly say!

Montblanc has launched a website displaying some of their current editions.

This year‘s WE is included 😉

Wow!  I like that it's a bit more understated than many of the recent ones.  I wish they had included the fold-out magnifying lens on the standard Limited Edition, though!

But man, the Limited 8 is fantastic!

As a non-MB owner/user (but someone who admires the opulence of the LEs), do people typically collect them as presentation items or to actually use? Presumably those who acquire the very LE editions think twice before inking up? Do they typically offer the durability needed for regular use?

Welcome views.

I dont own too many MB pens, maybe 12 "special" editions, including some limited editions... i lose count on how MB names it nowadays.
But anyhow, i use all my pens... regularly i use 4 for a few months, then clean, store and select 4 more... and so on. I write about 1-2ml per day... pens are to be used... otherwise they become trinkets.

As I understand it the special editions are produced for a limited time but are not limited in respect of the production run. I believe that the ‘Masters’ series (although there is a limited edition Purdey), the bottom end of the Characters series, Petit Prince and Jules Verne would be classified as Special Editions (amongst many others).

all of the POA and Writers pens to date are limited editions, meaning that there is a defined production run and each pen has an issue number on it somewhere. If you ever send such a pen for a nib replacement for example, MB won’t return the original nib to ensure the parts in circulation remain limited to the original distribution.  I recently sent my 147 in for a new nib and in that case it was returned with the old nib too.

As I mentioned previously, for me the enjoyment comes from using the pens but each to their own.

Returned nibs is pot luck. Ive changed two 149's and not got the nibs back and two WE's and got the nibs back.

I'd no idea what to do with them so ended up selling them. On reflection i may have pretty much given them away for a song.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
