How do fountain pens leak?

Recommended Posts

Hi Just dived into the fountain pen journey but seems i have many Everest's  to cover.

Day 2 the ink leaks into the cap when its placed in the pocket.Tooks buds dipped in water wipe down the stains in the cap

Day 3 The ink leaks again when placed in the stand.

Took out the convert and drained the ink.

Placed the nib in running water to drain the ink completely till the water turns clear.

Felt like discarding the entire pen in a shredder or let the road roller paste it but dunno some inner voice told me to hold my horses and try the catridge which came along with it.

Day4:-

The pen starts to skip testing my pressure limits as if the pen wants to be discarded.

I throw away the pen in the bag and bring back my ball point pen Pierre Cardin Sea King.

What exactly is going wrong with this pen?

Am i supposed to keep jerking the pen so that the nib comes down???

In the file titled Catridge writing sample in the last page after giving some vigorous jerks on the nib only then the ink came down else i was just writing blank invisible letters

The customers queue went on increasing and i am trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with this pen as the ink doesn't come out.

and when i jerk then there's a small dot followed by unwanted dots all across the paper

Try and wash the pen out, if a cartridge pen, use a small rubber baby ear bulb. It should fit right over the nipple and force what ever gunk is, if it is out of the feed, and from under the nib.

Do use some lightly soaped water, in often enough manufacturing oils and what not clog up a pen.

and little dots like that are as far as I know 'normal' for demonstrators.

I have none, do have some a couple transparent but colored pens. But are Pelikans, so I've not noticed that.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Try to seek help from manufacturer. Possibly return pickup at the time of delivery of replacement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
