Not much of a forum person, but here I am.

Hi, so after lurking for a while I thought it should be time that I join in. More so that in a short time my Fountain Pen collection has grown so I certainly can chirp in a few things. Maybe also find some advice on what should be good for possible future buys. Maybe I also have a few extra things some people are looking for? Let's see.

So well as for name I just did what came up in my mind first I am often called Mir or Mira and I live in the Netherlands so that adds up.

I don't really know what else to just tell in here just now. Anyway am here too now, if there are questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to FPN!

(I hope you don't mind my using your entries in the forum platform's activity streams as examples of this and that.)

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Hi Mira-NL, and welcome. It's good to see you here.

I look forward to hearing your chirps😄

I would love to write with a 'Merlin' one day. A special ambition of mine. Such a beautiful looking pen! I understand there is a strong link to the Netherlands.

Do you see them in your travels?

I haven't found one in New Zealand yet.

Thank you for the warm welcome.
As for collecting I kind of partly stumbled on some. A big chunk is stuff that somehow got to me in my childhood, Then there is a little chunk that came along an order because I was interested in 1 pen but it came with 2 others and also one that was listed as a left handed pen (I am lefthanded) but turned out to be a right handed one in a left handed box, which kind of is an interesting one too because it looks like but it also is a bit different (it is some Pelikano from the mid 90s).
Took over 3 pens from my grandmother after her passing. Once found a vintage school supplies pack that held a cheap FP (but I don't really like how it writes). They are 3 vintage ones from Germany. Not super expensive but still they have charm.

For me in general fountain pens are very much hit or miss. Like some write amazing. Some I need a little bit of time with because they may end up being something I like with time and others just well I have used them for a bit not a fan moving on...

My current favourites are a bit chonky like the Kaweco sport I picked out only came in a B nib but it writes nicely so I like it. I also like the Pelikano Up (L) a lot more than I thought. I like my childhood model (which is mid 90s) for the looks better but the way the up holds is comfy (I don't know how much difference writing feel has on the other modern Pelikano's but I liked that the up looks a slight bit more mature for a beginners school pen) an other one that currently isn't inked but that I do remember the writing feel of is also pelikan brand school pen P55. Also currently inked and the first one with a thin line I actually do enjoy is a Yiren that sort of looks like a Lamy Safari but with rainbow colours it writes nicely may just pick up a second one of them as they are so cheap. Also mean to try out a proper Lamy Safari at some point, maybe I'll like those even better? Will see. There is a lot to find out yet and I still have space... but not all at once!

Been wondering and eying about a few brands. Also some a little more luxorious than my usual choices, not sure if I'll go for them at some point, am reading a lot of reviews that I can find and who knows maybe there is some way for me to give some pens a try even (in these kind of weird times)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
