Desperately seeking... Blackstone Sydney Harbour Blue

Broomstick

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I had a sample of Blackstone’s Sydney Harbour Blue and used it on a project I started. Project ends up larger than I expected and I ran out. So I have scoured the internet looking for this discontinued ink, to no avail. Any suggestions where I might look to find this ink, obscure ink shops, little mom & pop shops? I may be totally SOL, but thought I would throw out the question! 🙏 Thank you!

Has something happened to Justwrite.com?

On their website I don't see any indication of that...

Thanks mhguda! Oh, I tried there! They have a few colours remaining, but not SHB. (I placed an online order for three bottles from them...because I was there :)

Broomstick, that's scary news indeed! My only bottle came from them, and I was assuming if I needed to replenish, there would not be a problem... seems I was wrong? Do you know what happened? Have they really stopped making Sydney Harbour Blue? Of all their inks, I think I loved that one the most, and I bought a big bottle, so I still have quite a bit left, and it also takes dilution quite well, but still...

I saw all Blackstone Inks in reduced sale lists and thought I read somewhere they were no longer made. Mountain of Ink suggests KWZ Baltic Memories or Robert Oster Lake of Fire as alternatives.

If I'm not mistaken, Blackstone as an ink producer went out of business and just vanished last year, without warning or announcement, once the pandemic started; and the JustWrite web site went off the air for several months as well. My guess is someone eventually bought what's left of the enterprise, took over the web site and is just selling off the last of the stock on hand.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

The Just Write website is active and actually posting blog posts as of January this year. There are a few items for sale, but it was strange when I put an order in...hey, I had to...it was COD and there was no indication of the cost for shipping. We’ll see what happens, I am not confident, but I didn’t pay anything yet!

Thanks. I'm aware it's back online. Looking nothing like how it was when Kevin was still producing and selling inks, though.

Yes, I stepped through the process in December, too — without actually intending to make a purchase (from its list of offers), but just out of curiosity, so I can't tell you what had or would have happened (i.e. if I received the products, how payment was effected) if I'd completed the order.

Again, not out any money nor do they have any cc info. The rate the post is moving, if anything actually does arrive, I probably will have forgotten about it, and it will be like Christmas!

+1. I bought Appelboom’s last 1.5 bottles of it so I’m good to go for a while. Really rich and saturated as sold, wonderfully nuanced and shady when diluted up to 40%. My little stash is hopefully going to last me a loooong time. Great ink!

The JustWrite website now shows the new owners. It looks like they have Barrier Reef Blue but I can't see Sydney Harbour Blue.

Thanks Steveg58!! I had placed an order for the Barrier Reef and the Daintree green but it was "COD", I have not heard anything from them...That was April 11th (maybe). Just strange. As I did not have to give a credit card or pay anything, I am not hopeful, but at least not out-of-pocket! B

Yeah, I have reservations about CoD based on prior experience many years ago ... I didn't know it was even still a thing. I asked on their contact form if they were getting PayPal or credit card facilities about 10 days or so ago but they never responded.

I hope Blackstone ink comes back in to business.  I also hope Kevin (the owner) is well.  Please let us know if you hear from him.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Just seen this post. I have an almost full bottle of Sydney Harbour Blue concentrate. If you think you'll need some more let me know and I'll get it to you somehow.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
