Narwhal Schuylkill mini review

After debating for a bit I decided to buy a Narwhal Schuylkill.  Last year I had purchased a different model but returned it when I realized it wouldn't post.  That was a lovely green, but I knew I wouldn't use it. I didn't even dip test it.

The Schuylkill does post.  Mine has a F nib and in Rockfish Red, and handsome color that looks very reminiscent of cherrywood or purple heart.  I was concerned that I would be unhappy with the nib but it writes quite well; it is smooth writer and started up right away without the need for any capillary action!  It writes like a good European F.  The pen is very well-weighted in my hand.

I dip-tested with Pilot tsukushi and thought it was a good pairing so that is what I used to for its first fill.  It also has a very small ink window close to where the cap closes the pen which is a nice touch.  This is a very good pen for the price.  Picture below:

@essayfaire, I'm not sure whether to thank you for the review or not.  I hadn't planned on buying a new pen any time soon, but I didn't know this one existed before your review, and I may "need" to buy it just for the name.  So maybe I thank you, but my wallet dissents. :)

I haven't been able to find the unposted weight of the pen, though.  Do you happen to know, or would it be possible for you to weigh just the pen without the cap, without too much trouble?

Unfortunately, no on both counts.  It's lighter than a Benu Euphoria and slightly heavier than a Twisbi Go or Platinum Prefounte.  Probably close to the Benu if both are uncapped, but the cap itself is lighter.

Supply creates it's own demand...but I am pleased I bought this pen even though I didn't "need" it! Sorry. ;)

Thanks anyway.  I've been digging a little more online, and it looks as though it's probably light enough for my comfort, so I think I'll "have" to try it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
