Birmingham Pen Co. ink qualities

After admiring the inks over at Birmingham Pen Co. for a while I ordered three of their weathered brick (a nice muted red), waterfront dusk (dusty purple), and marmalade (a nice orange-yellow). Not a ton of reviews out there (I guess due to being a new company) but what I’ve read is positive. Anyone know if these are safe for vintage pens or sac pens in general?

My understanding is that they're supposed to be (or at least some of their earlier lineup (the ones with Pittsburgh referenced names) were.  But I don't know as how I've ever tried, other than a couple in the Sheaffer Balance Oversize which had belonged to my husband's grandfather.  Schenley Park Thicket Green did well in that pen; I just checked my notes and Shadyside Walnut Street Brown was a bit of a hard starter.  I'll have to go through my combo journal log to see about other vintage pens, and I'm afraid I don't have time at the moment (too much chaos happening at the moment -- this is the first time I've been on FPN in nearly a week as it is) to go beyond the pages for the Sheaffer pens.

As for Waterfront Dusk in particular, I think they've changed the formula -- my bottle was a dark purplish blue, but the more recent version on their website seemed to be a lot redder than my batch.

I do miss Smithfield Street Bridge Truss Blue, which I never managed to get a full bottle of, only a few samples.

Sorry I can't be of more help.  I REALLY miss their B&M store -- they tried to keep prices comparable to online venders, and I liked wandering in every now and then, going "Nick!  Whatcha got new in for me today!"  One time I went in to take a look at the Pacific Blue Lamy al-Star.  Didn't get that pen, but walked out with a much lighter weight wallet than the al-Star would have been: a pink TWSBI 580-AL and three bottles of De Atramentis ink that hadn't really even been sorted yet because Nick had literally just gotten the bottles out of the package and onto the counter....

All I can really suggest to you is to contact them and ask, and/or hope other people have more experience with their current lineup.

I have similarly used several of the original Birmingham inks in vintage pens, but the reformulations look different enough that they might also behave differently.

Great company! Excellent attention to detail. In today's environment, very classy presentation, which is nice to see. Great communication. Items well packed and they make the customer feel special. Buy with confidence. I am sure they will address any questions you may need answered.

I'm sort of excited to try those Twinkle inks or the sheeny inks.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
