Hi, I’ve just signed up from Australia

I have about 10 pens and a dozen or so inks, mainly Lamy Safari and noodles inks being on a budget. Have lots of favourite pens I’d like to try.  Reluctant to buy without trying and CANBERRA has only one pen shop.

Hello and welcome :)

I wish I could help on the pen shops, but I'm a fair way away from you!

Are there no pen clubs/shows/groups in the area?

How do you know they're your favourites among pens, if you have yet to try them and make a comparison?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Fair question, I classify the pens I covet currently as favorites, for now the Esterbrook Estie and Conklin with the classic filler.  This seems a good place to chat with others about pens, paper, nibs and inks

Welcome! 😁 If you're looking for local pens there's a wonderful pen maker who moved to Canberra - Pensive Pens.

Welcome from a fellow (non-native) Canberran.

It does suck only having one pen shop, but I shop online mostly anyway. The Muji in the Canberra Centre (right next to the one pen shop) sells great fountain pen friendly notebooks though.

Hello from a fellow newbie! I feel your pain - most things I've had to order online, pay shipping $$ and wait for weeks, in the hope that I'll like what I get. I'm a big fan of Australian ink makers though - Robert Oster is fantastic. I'm wondering about Van Dieman's - have you tried them?

Hi AngMK 🙂 I have just recently bought quite a few colours from Van Dieman's in Tasmania. They had a '50ml for 30ml price' special. The shipping was very reasonable and they were happy to send to New Zealand. It took a while to get through Melbourne Airport Mail Centre though.

But there was possibly a lockdown at the time.

I guess the aussie landscape has a big influence on Robert Oster colours and also with Van Dieman's.

Cheers pp

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
