Can someone educated me on Soenneckens?

This is a brand I've heard mentioned a lot in comparison to MB especially but also Pelikan, and although it wouldn't be an immediate purchase. Rather, now, I'm just taking the time to research and see where I end up.

Here are my basic interests:

1. I'd prefer something the size of a 146. but I'm not dead set on that especially since I know vintage pens of that size can be less common/pricey and $200-300 is probably my realistic limit(if that's possible) for a purchase in this brand.

2. Nib preference would either be an oblique grind or something with nice flex. I'm guessing the latter would be more common

3. A poke around Ebay shows several 1xx, 2xx, and 3xx models. Are these similar to MBs where 1 is "premium", 2 is "standard" and 3 is "school?"(or pick your word to describe the 1st/2nd/3rd line pens). In addition to that, can the other numbers be "decoded"?(i.e. like the last digit on MBs telling you the size, 2-9).

4. What service is one found "in the wild" likely to need? Do these have cork piston seals like MBs? Are there any really common or perhaps not so common but really problematic mechanical issues to be aware of(I've been told MB telescopic pistons are basically done if they slip although I've never tried to find out since mine all work fine-I want to be aware of anything like that).

5. Anything else important I should know just to get a solid writer?

6. Are there any go-to dealers for these pens?

Knowing myself, I know that the first I buy will likely just be a "gateway" but I'd still like to buy smart to start out with.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
