The colours also differ, from murkier to high contrast

As a matte black aficionado I lose out on this, but I may appreciate the finer texture. Something to explore in the future.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Ebonite costs a LOT more than acrylics.  GOOD ebonite costs A LOT more than that.  German ebonite is the most expensive you can find, then close in price but a little cheaper is Japanese, then a lot lot cheaper is Indian.  Then you have the time it takes to finish the material once it's turned.  Acrylic is easier and quicker to finish than ebonite.  So the price difference based on material is because of those 2 things.

@Newton PensThank you for providing a very informative answer from a pen maker's perspective!👍

So I decided.  I ordered a Santini Libra Cumberland Gold (Ebonite) with 18kt Gold (F Flexy) nib.  I love the looks of it (based on their photographs) better than acrylic resins.

I'll let you know when I get it.

Very nice 😊.

I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered - the latest estimate from UPS is next Thursday.  Apparently there was some strike action in Italy by the courier which held up the collection of my package (and no doubt many others) by a week.

Ironically, acrylic is the rage in smoke pipe stems over vulcanite or Ebonite.

Uh oh.  Let's hope it's only a week delay.

@Mysterious Mose I'm curious have you received your Libra yet? I too am considering one and would be interested in your experience and impressions.

No, I haven't received it yet.  They got it ready and shipped it to me today.  I ordered it April 5, so it took them 11 days (9 working days).  From what people in the Forum said, I expect to receive it in about a week.

I'll let you know when I get it and what my impressions are.

As a long ago pipe-smoker I cannot imagine the unpleasantness of biting an acrylic stem.

You don't have to bit a stem.

Didn't say you had to. Pipe Smoking

I smoked a pipe while working. It had to be held in place by a bite between the teeth. I don't remember any pipe smokers that didn't.

Maybe the posh seated in an overstuffed chair who only smoked in drawing rooms while wearing an ascot and velvet smoking jacket as Jeeves drew their bath didn't, but I didn't hang with those types.

Maybe Jeeves smoked for them through pursed lips only lightly touching the stem.

You didn't, but it was implied.

I understand that some like to smoke in all sorts of situations where chomping a stem is the norm, but it would be a mistake to think that the only people who don't are your betters. Or, it isn't a class or uppity thing.

Your mind 'implied' it; I didn't.

I'll let you know when I get it and what my impressions are.

The ebonite Santini Libra Cumberland Gold fountain pen arrived in record time.  It was shipped to me on Friday, April 16 and delivered on Monday, April 19, three days later.  That was one business day.  I ordered the pen on April 5, so it took 9 business days to completely manufacture the pen.

There was a hitch in ordering the pen.  I wanted to charge it on my credit card.  Instead, it was initially paid for partially with my PayPal balance and the rest with the credit card.  Katrina said that could only be rectified by cancelling the order and submitting a new order.  I cancelled the order on April 5 but could not make payment for several days because it took that long for the refund to be processed.  Katrina told me that Santini would start making the pen on April 5 even though they did not yet have my payment.  That was very generous of them.

The packaging was very pleasant.  It was like a Russian doll.  Each box had within it another box wrapped in black tissue paper.  The outermost box was tied in a ribbon.

Note that Santini manually tested the pen by writing with it.  They provided the results of that writing.

I haven’t had the pen long enough to write a complete review, but can give my initial impressions.

The pen is gorgeous and doesn’t look anything like my other 10 fountain pens.  It is oversized, which I like.  It is actually wider and longer than my Pelikan M805 pen.

It has a flex nib, and feels soft.  I expect that this nib will take getting used to.  Writing with no pressure feels good and produces a fine line.  Writing with more pressure produces a thicker line.  It does railroad while drawing a fifth line of about 5 ½” each.

I look forward to using this pen more.

wow that is beautiful. would love to hear how the nib performs.

I think I'm in love.  I got some good practice using it for lessons in a Palmer book.  ("The Palmer Method of Business Writing" by Austin Palmer).  It seems that if I write with no pressure, it's very smooth.  If I apply pressure on the Flexy nib, it makes a scratchy noise and feels a little rough.  Is this what's called "feedback?"

I've always wanted my pens to be wet.  My Pelikan M805 and the first high-end pen I had, a Montblanc 146, just glide over the page.  To paraphrase a Bix Beiderbecke song, "I never cared for feedback, but this pen has feedback, and that's my weakness now."

Well, it shouldn't feel scratchy.  The classic feedback is from Aurora nibs.  They do not just glide over the page, but rather tell you exactly where you are by there being just a tad more resistance to the paper than, say, a Montblanc nib.

Hope that helps -

So, usually, I'm not a fan  of ebonite, but NOW I am a fan - these are beautiful!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
