Suggestions for a new Made in India pen

Hi all,

i am looking to get a relatively not so expensive India made pen. I already have Wality 69t and camlin elegante and looking for pens around same size. ( i like them very much)

  • prefer self filling pens. (already have several eyedroppers)
  • less than 1000rupees
  • Torpedo design
  • sturdy ( less plasticky)
  • Fine to extra fine nib

i was looking at Kanwrite desire and the 2 section version of airmail 71j provided by kiwipens (https://www.kiwipens.com/products/airmail-wality-71j-ed-3-in-1-fill-jumbo-orange-fountain-pen-with-kanwrite-nib?variant=28614344966196) that gives KW nib option with CC filling. Or ASA Daily/patriot

what are your opinions on these. Are there other pens that you would recommend?

thanks

In Beena (V'Sign) there are good, sturdy, inexpensive 3-in-1 filling pens (Antic model, Stride model), piston filler (Neo model). I have used these pens and they are very good. There is also a brass body V'Sign pen for around Rs. 500 (not used it myself).

In Click brand, Aristocrat model is quite good and will fit your criteria.

Kanwrite Desire is of course good.

Parker Frontier (metallic version) is quite sturdy.

I have a couple of the Luxor made Parker Frontiers and the are sturdy, dependable and surprisingly smooth writers.  With that classic simple torpedo type design you really can't go wrong and being metal they have some actual feel to them.  I also have a few Click Aristocrat models and they are quite good pens but they feel very plasticky and the included converters were close to useless.  The Kanwrite Desire is a great pen that gives you a great spectrum of colors, a quality nib and a converter that actually works.  Being a three way filler you have plenty of options and the flex nib gives you a bit of character on the page while still being a consistent fine line.  Hope this helps.

I wonder how Kanwrite desire compares to other pens like ASA Daily?

Desire costs around Rs. 650, excluding the shipping charges.

ASA Daily costs roughly Rs. 1500, the pen is shipped without any additional cost.

I'd also recommend Beena Antic. Surprisingly it has a very pleasant feel. If you contact V'sign directly they have version of Antic (costs a bit more) with some special nib. I have both, and the one with special nib feels smoother.

I have both Elegante and Desire pens. For me Desire feels a bit lighter in the hand as compared to Elegante (I use them unposted), but without cap they have the same weight, around 10 grams. Also, note that Desire uses #6 nib (you have the option to get Desire with #5.5 nib as well) as opposed to #5.5 in Elegante. Some people may prefer a smaller nib.

Desire is a good option if you want to try different nibs, and I think its a well known fact that Kanwrite nibs are touch smoother (and wetter) than other Indian manufacturers. Although, trying out different nibs sounds very exciting, but having tried it, I think it's best to not go on this path unless you have some sense of what kind of nibs you may like. Otherwise, you will end up with a lot of nibs out of which you only end up using a couple on a regular basis.

I am not sure how easy it will be to get an ASA Daily, as it seems ASA pens is only offering Maya and Nauka on their e-shop. So, the wait can be longer.

Another pen I would recommend if you are willing to give a go at a cheap pen - Pierre Cardin Penomatic (costs around Rs. 75), maybe I was lucky but the one I have writes beautifully. Highly recommended. It writes between Fine and Extra Fine. Pierre Cardin converters are similar to Camlin's.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
