These type of MP's are after my time. We had nothing so thick as that 4 sided lead back when we had silver money. wbZGwHt.jpg

I was looking at a couple German kids school boxes and discovere it in the 'junk' left in the pen box.

Rotring  ? I have been using mine (Quattro model) since about 1992 .  I bought a "multi pen" as I was using it as a Surveyor. It was used on the job, in an underground mine (terrible conditions for a human let alone a writing instrument) for years and is still being used today.

Had way too many of these lead holder / mechanical pencil courtesy of my prior duty as an on site engineer ; seriously no particular favourite , still a fan of the technical drafting pencils but they can be a PITA trying to travel with .. these days I look for mechanical pencil that had retractable lead sleeve , my recent goto mechanical pencil is the Pentel Orenz Metal Grip in 0.5 , I do also recommend their 2B lead and recently am trying out all the newer 3B lead and they feel even better , for 0.7 I prefer the Mitsubishi Uni Kuru Toga Advance , I seldom had any use of O.3 these days but if asked for I would go back to the no frill technical drafting pencil I had.

Despite its fame I never find the Rotring any good over the others , just like many high end models they might be a very well made piece of craftsmanship but that does not made them a better pencil / pen

Back in the days when we wrote computer programs on coding forms and sent them to keypunching, my 0.5mm pencil of choice was a Pentel PG5. The PG series is also available as a PG2 and PG4, although I have not had much success writing with the smaller sizes. Cheaper and easier to find alternatives to the PG5 from Pentel were Techniclick, QuickerClicker and P205. The latter is also available P02 and P03. Going upscale you have the Rotring 600, Graphgear 1000 and Sheaffer Prelude. The latter is pocket friendly. I have used and like all the pencils mentioned.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
