Some pictures of the nib. It may be a bit bent (though I don’t have much to compare it to). Can that be fixed?

I wouldn't worry too much about the nib at this point - it is a bit wibbly and could be straightened up a bit, but provided the tips are even it should write just fine. It's more likely to get damaged by someone who doesn't know what they're doing fiddling with it than simply leaving it alone.

There's nothing wrong with it in terms of the tine separation and provided you keep to a light hand, it's likely to be a joy to use. These are meant to be used, so do so and enjoy!

And it's a very beautiful pen btw.

Writes beautifully!!

The story behind this pen is that I bought it on eBay a few years ago. It was listed as gold filled, but you could tell in the pictures that it was marked 14kt... so I knew it was something special. I didn’t even know what a 514 was at the time. I ended up getting an amazing deal — I think I paid somewhere between $100-200. Since then, because it’s a beautiful pen and because of the story, it’s been my favorite pen I’ve ever bought myself... and now I can actually use it!

See! That's better :)

When you're really comfortable with writing lightly, you can start trying just a tiny bit of pressure on the downstrokes. Keep it slow and the results will be amazing!

I agree. The nib has a bit of a wrinkle resulting in an upturn away from the feed.

Do you know how I could get that fixed if it becomes an issue? It seems to write fine right now, but would be good to know in the future -- unless there's some risk in using it with this wrinkle...?

It shouldn't become an issue for daily use. Im no expert on this, but i cant see it causing issues for daily use. If you want to get it fixed you can contact your local fountain pen repair person.

It's not at the point when you will need some one specialised to get things sorted. so any one that does straightening can sort it out for you.

For any nibs with serious problems / needs re-tipping etc i would go for :

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been using the pen regularly, and I just love it! However, I realized that my middle finger keeps getting inky when I use it, and I believe the cause my be a little hairline crack on the grip. You can actually see it in the pictures. Is that repair-able? Is there anything I can do to make my writing experience a bit cleaner?

Thanks so much @Addertooth!

It does appear to have a little hairline crack, so every time I use it, I get ink on my middle finger. It's also a bit too wet -- even though I'm using quality paper (Mnemosyne), the ink almost bubbles up on the page and takes *forever* to dry. I'm thinking of sending it off for repair. Does anyone know what I should ask for to solve those issues?

Also, for me to send it out, I'll probably have to drain it. How would you recommend I do that?

Alas, it cannot be properly repaired. You need a new section. They are not hard to come by, as the 14 is the same size as the 12.

@crescentfiller Thanks so much!

I'll be sending it out to a reliable repair person (along with a few other pens) to see what he thinks in person. If it needs a new section, perhaps he can help me source one.

I rinsed out the barrel and cap using a syringe with water until it ran dry. However, there's still enough ink in the nib and feed to write... do you have a way of draining that ink, or is it okay to mail it with that amount of ink in it? I've never mailed a pen before.

If you emptied the barrel it will be fine to mail. Wrap it in a paper towel and put it in a baggie and seal it.

However, despite what many amateurs will claim, you cannot glue hard rubber together. And the section is under great stress from the feed/nib being wedged in and from the pressure of writing. You need a new section.  And, if you can get the feed and nib out of the old one, you can screw in a new one--just like screwed out the current one. So, no need to send out.

Good luck

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
