Please recommend a Callifolio blue-black/blue-grey

Calling all L’Artisan Pastellier fans, please!

I am preparing an order from L'Artisan Pastellier and having trouble picking a blue-black/blue-grey.  Online samples of their Callifolio blue-blacks/blue-greys can look very similar. I already have Baikal, Gris de Payne from the Classique inks (which leans a little bit green), and I plan to order Callifolio Gris de Payne & Equinoxe (5), so I am interested in Bosphore, Botany Bay, Byzance, and Bonne Esperance.

For those of you who have used these inks: which would best complement (i.e. be most different from) Classique Gris de Payne, and Callifolios Baikal, Gris de Payne, and Equinoxe (5)? (I'm happy to hear other considerations with these blue-blacks/blue-greys, as well.)

I have only one such ink, Callifolio Oconto.  It behaves itself quite well.  I can't help with the color comparisons.

Thanks for the info. Other blues planned for this order are Ohlanga, Bleu Equinox 5, Bleu Meditarranee, and one of the blue-blacks/blue-greys I mentioned previously - Oconto will likely be for a future order. (And I didn't used to be much of a fan of blue inks ...)

Regarding L'Artisan Pastellier, I just now found this catalog of their various inks: https://artisanpastellier.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/catalogue-complet-encres.pdf

Not sure if it is new or I just missed it before. Unfortunately it is rather low resolution and many of the writing samples and swatches of the Callifolio blues do not seem like close matches to other pictures online.

@namrehsnoom made excellent reviews of the whole Callifolio lineup.

Yes, I am aware and I agree that they are excellent. In absence of any advice here I will likely rely on those to a large degree for my pick.

I am currently leaning towards Botany Bay.

For a blue-grey, I like Bosphore a lot. Excellent writing ink. Don’t think you can go wrong with that one. I actually prefer it a bit more than Botany Bay. They are quite similar, but personally I think Bosphore has a stronger presence on the page (somewhat more saturated, maybe that’s why).

More saturated sounds good. Baikal, while beautiful and used often, has been pretty unsaturated out of my fine nib pens, which I an tending towards for writing. Bosphore sounds like it will complement it well in my ink collection.

Thanks much for the advice!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
