Lamy Safari Savannah Green and Terra Red compared, 1980 vs 2021

I now have my Savannah Green and Terracotta Red Safaris and I am so pleased with them.  I've been wanting a Savannah Green Safari pen for many years, I but couldn't bring myself to shell out the big bucks that the vintage versions were going for.  Moreover, had I bought an original, I would have considered to too precious and fragile to use.  With the 2021 remakes, I have no such qualms.

I remember a student writing with one of these when I was in high school in Germany in the early 1980s.  I was strangely fascinated by the modern shape and 'strange' proprietary cartridge.  I just kept using my Pelikano Model 5 (I didn't have the budget for a spare fountain pen).  About 40 years later, I am now writing with a Savannah Green Safari too.  It feels great.

How does the texture compares with the old timers and the Umbra Safari?

Is it as course as the special edition Violet Safari?

Thanks!

To my touch these have the same surface texture as all my other "matt" finished Safaris (Umbra, Grey, Violet, Petrol).

I think that the current 'matt' Safaris, being them the petrol, black and violet, are a tiny bit rougher than the Umbra or the Safaris of old, like the grey or white.

I'll guess that half of my wishes brought up to the lineup should be enough for me, black clips and nibs, and jump on the newest recruits!

Can't say. My 80's umbra is gloss... 😂

 Picture or it doesn't exist!

p.s. Maybe is so old and used that all the texture has rubbed off!

This. It's my old school pen. Nicely polished. 😉

1/. when this was made?

2/. and was this is Savannah Green too or other color?

It's an old savanna green, 80's (West Germany imprint), metal screw, someone painted the logo black. It's not an original feature.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
