Pilot Myu nib and date code

I just acquired a Pilot Myu 701 that's dated 1171( November 1971). Above the date code is usually where the nib size is printed, but on this one, there is none. Every other Myu I own, which are newer than 1971 has the F marking above the date code. Those pens are from 1973-1976. Comparing the nib to a Pilot Custom Black Stripe from 1972, the line that the Myu makes looks like a F, but again, it's not marked on the pen.

Does anyone have any insight as to why this is?

Sorry no response. As moderator I generally wait until other offer thoughts before writing.

It has been some years since buying and selling Myu so my brain cells might be rusty. Some years ago I made a spreadsheet of datecodes and nib sizes for Pilot Myu and Pilot Super models. It was interesting to see production dates for different models.

Back to your Myu. Myu was introduced in 1971 and as I recall it was late in that year. My guess is you have an early model. The model is thought to have been a Japanese version of the Parker T-1 introduced in 1970. The T-1 came in two nib sizes. Pilot must have embarked on this model with some trepidation as it is unique and distinctive and expensive to engineer and produce. So producing a pen with the commonest nib size and no size noted on the pen may have been the initial plan.

Keep the pen.

Thanks for the information. I'll hold onto the pen and continue using it. It's an interesting notion that it isn't dated because they may not have been confidence in this line.

I will hold onto the pen. Thanks!
