Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Noodler's Heart of Darkness

This is review #75 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning notes: The following isn't as bad as it sounds.  Remember that I am being ridiculously thorough so that the next ink isn't altered by the previous ink. And permanent inks require more effort anyway...  I disassembled the section for cleaning.  The ink clung to the back of the nib and I used a Q-Tip and plain water to get it off.  Water, Q-Tip, and pipe cleaner were used to wipe ink from inside the section.  Water got it off the plastic of the CON-50, but it clung to the metal rivet.  Pen flush and pipe cleaner were used to clean the rivet as well as possible.  The feed was soaked in pen flush, then scrubbed with a toothbrush.  The sonicator was not needed whereas it was needed for De Atramentis Document Black (the closest comparison I can make).

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Wow you getting there, brave :) ... we're reaching the venerable "vegetable" inks soon...I would move in the pilot mixable ins in between otherwise, we'll be stuck with the proverbial broccoli... :D

Super useful!

(and back to my faithful 4001 black)

Thanks. :) Dry times weren't bad on, for example, 24lb HP Premium LaserJet paper (purchased years ago, before the change that made it no good).  In fact, I didn't even notice the dry time, so it must have been close to instant - also on the absorbent puzzle paper I test - totally instant.  But on FP-friendly paper, it does take its own sweet time.

Hmm.  I like broccoli.  It's one of my favorite veggies, despite the fact that it's trying to kill me. (Link is to YouTube video about veggie defense systems.)

As for the Pilot Mixable inks, I've considered not reviewing them, but people often ask whether they're OK for regular fountain pens since they're labeled as only for Parallels, so...

I think there are a lot of good inks left (Mixables and Thornton aside).  And I have an infusion of inks that will come in the spring / summer - not sure how many.  And I may buy a bunch more samples in late summer.  Still, you may be right.  Those Mixables probably need to be scattered, as it were.  Perhaps I'll start with the poor, neglected kids no one wants on their team. :crybaby:  I suspect the yellow ink won't even be visible, but it could surprise us...

  • 1 year later...

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 280µm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
