Sailor Lecoule owners, help please

So I bought a new Sailor Lecoule (Iron Blue). Found a scratch/crack on the grip section so I contacted the online store I bought it from. They agreed to replace it, but I still decided to ask on reddit if others have encountered the same thing (curved line that ISN'T the plastic seam from moulding).

Someone replied that they had the same pen, and there was no line...but then edited their reply saying they saw the same line (very very faint) that my pen has. So my question is, is the curved line normal.

I still don't know how to upload pictures, so here's a link to show what I'm talking about:

Sailor Lecoule owners, please help. I still have time to contact the store to cancel the replacement if it IS normal. I feel bad for hassling them over nothing if it turns out that Lecoules all have the same faint line.

That is not normal.

I saw your reddit post, but don't have an account there.

Generally, in injection moulded pens, it is normal to see a faint line that goes all the way in the grip section, top to bottom. The cheaper the pen, the more likely to encounter it (as they don't spend much time buffering it out/polishing the section, as opposed to the more expensive models).

That, however, is not the left-over line from injection moulding. It is quite certainly a defect. What kind of defect is the question, if cosmetic you might be able to tolerate it (you shouldn't), but if it is worse, then in the worst case scenario it might be a crack and leak, eventually.

I once received a Lecoule, which had mucked up threads, whenever I un-/screwed the pen, plastic was being shaved off. The retailer replaced the faulty Lecoule and this one needs to be replaced as well.

Ask for a replacement and your pic shows quite clearly a faulty pen.

Thanks for your reply! 😊 The guy on Reddit commented again. He said that the line on my pen was more prominent than his, and that if it were him, he'd ask for a replacement too. 😅

So I guess I'll be waiting for my replacement to arrive. 😊 Hopefully it doesn't have the same defect because I do love the color of the pen, and the one they're sending is their last one in stock.

Thanks again for your reply! 😁

I've never seen anything like that on the various Sailor Lecoule pens I have (or had but since sold).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

You're welcome, I hope the replacement is fine!

UPDATE:

The replacement arrived and it had the same exact line in the same exact place. More people commented on my reddit post saying their pens had the same line too (in both or only one side). I've decided to keep the original pen since I already inked it up, and I returned the new pen (replacement) to the seller; luckily their office is very near my home...and yes, next time, I'll just go to them instead of ordering online (so I can examine their pens and ask my questions). 😅

I'm guessing this is an inconsistency in Sailor's plastic moulding process. What ever the reason for the line, I guess it's within the tolerance of Sailor's quality control. I'm just glad to know the line isn't a crack. I've been using it for a week with no issues and I'm very happy with its performance.

Now I need more Sailor medium-fine or fine nibs. 🤣

Thanks to everyone for replying! 😊🙏🏻

Thank you for letting us know!

That's beyond odd, frankly I'm rather astonished.

I think there's a bad batch or something, maybe the machine (making them) is broken???

The shop should let the distributor (i.e. Sailor) know that there's a bad batch, even if it's just cosmetic.

This is not okay.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
